Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 5/28-6/3

I’m not a huge fan of music videos or recorded concerts. I like my music in live form. But I must say, the musical highlight of my week was getting in the mail my new Biffy Clyro Live at Wembley CD/DVD made during their Revolutions tour. I popped in the DVD while composing this week’s show list and within one song, I was bouncing around my room in my Mon the Biff t-shirt with that stupid giddy smile plastered across my face. I spent entirely too much money importing this special package, but the unadulterated happiness it has provided is priceless. Now I have to decide where to put my new Biffy Clyro poster…maybe I should obtain a frame…

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar 2/6-2/12

Posted on by .

Well…that was certainly an eventful weekend. Friday night I had a very ominous feeling before going to the El Rey to join a friend for Adam Gontier (of Three Days Grace) and Martin Sexton. At the end of the evening, I ended up in fascinating company at my fave late night eatery and I thought my gut must have been waaay off. Three hours later, sleepless and in the ER with a friend, my earlier instincts were justified.

Saturday, I cancelled my plans to participate in Tyrone Well’s music video shoot in Venice for sleep’s sake. Then it was an evening at The Rainbow Room and The Hotel Cafe with great food, friends, and music (the three essentials of any successful evening).

Today I had to cut myself off from the world and lock myself in lab as I had entered the weekend woefully behind on an important deadline at work and that I have two big presentation to give in the next seven days. I barely survived last week. I can’t remember the last time I pushed my poor body so hard for so long. I can’t say it was a bad week because it was peppered by some amazing musical experiences, but it’s not a good sign when going to a show is a “break” rather than the end of your day. But it is weeks like these that make me most thankful for great live music and its ability to get me through just about anything.

Here’s to hoping this week can be fabulous without the severe sleep deprivation!  Musically, there is a lot of promise. Friday I’m going to wish I could be in 10 places at once. This weekend just seemed to slip through my fingertips. I swear I spent most of it in front of my computer working, but I certainly don’t have anything to show for it. I did manage to get out Friday night for a little Culture Collide (such a great festival!). Then Saturday night was an evening at The Hotel Cafe where I was taken on a journey back to 2004 with Michael Tolcher. Hearing Michael play some of my favorite tunes from that year made me realize just how connected certain songs are to particular years of my life…and that 2004 may very well be my happiest year. I’m not sure if that year’s greatness was more because of the music or because of the events that the music accompanied, but I do know that the bands and songs that I associate with that time will forever be my favorites.

What songs are going to make that indelible imprint on 2011? Could it be a song heard by a band playing this week? Quite possibly! Here’s my schedule:

ALSO: Foxy Shazam at Chain Reaction in Anaheim (10pm)

The Classic Crime comes to Anaheim

Posted on by .

This Tuesday I really hope to find the time and energy to trek down to Anaheim to a place called Chain Reaction to see a band called The Classic Crime. The Classic Crime is from Seattle but despite their relative proximity they don’t seem to make it down to LA all that often and I’ve only seen them once (at Warped Tour).  I discovered them several years ago when I was bored and cruising myspace (two things that never happen anymore). The band had just released an acoustic EP, Seattle Sessions, and someone had posted the track “Seattle” on their page. It was love at first listen! I immediate ordered the EP and that song ended up making my best of list that year. Now listen and love that track, but be warned that is not the sound typical of this band (I mentioned Warped Tour, right?). Actually, when listening to the breadth of their catalog of music, I realize that it’s a bit difficult to classify them much further than “rock.” Their CD The Silver Chord produced one of my fave tracks of this year, “Closer Than We Think.” They have a new CD coming out April 6th called Vagabonds and I would love to see some of their new material performed…I’m also still crossing my fingers that I’ll get to hear “Seattle.” My heart…will melt…

Howdy Folks!

There are two very important things happening this week. First is the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. This is one of the biggest music (and film) festivals of the year. So many of my favorite bands are going to be there…unfortunately this means, not so many are going to be around this week. And this is incredibly unfortunate considering important thing #2 which is that this Thursday is my birthday! Life would be perfect if I were in Texas this week, but alas that is not my fate. Instead, I will be listening to all the artists that will be playing in Austin via the internet and compiling my best of SXSW ’10 list (last year’s introduced me to bands such as Nico Vega and The Crash Kings!!).

There are still some excellent shows this week if you’re looking for some live music! And if you’re looking to get me something for my birthday…just forward to me the names of some of your favorite bands (especially if you think I haven’t heard of them)…new music is the best gift! :)

This week’s shows:

Monday: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at House of Blues Anaheim (8pm)

ALSO: Paris Carney at Room 5 (8pm)

ALSO: Andy Clockwise at The Troubadour (8pm)

ALSO: She & Him at Largo at the Coronet (8pm)

Tuesday: The Swell Season at Largo at the Coronet (8:30)

ALSO: The Classic Crime at Chain Reaction in Anaheim (8pm)

Weds: Kingsize at The Silverlake Lounge (9pm)

ALSO: Brooke White, Nina Storey, and Tommy King at The Hotel Cafe (8,9,10)

ALSO: The Shakers at Kibitz Room (Canter’s Deli)…part of their residency (11pm)

ALSO: Beachwood Rockers’ Society

Thursday: Watkins Family Hour at Largo at the Coronet (8pm)…fave Nickel Creek siblings Sara and Sean Watkins with special guests!

ALSO: Terra Naomi at The Hotel Cafe (8pm)

ALSO: Mississippi Man at The Roxy (8pm)

ALSO: New Found Glory at the House of Blues (8:30)

Friday: Brian Fallon (of Gaslight Anthem) at The Troubadour (9pm)

Saturday: The Elizabeth Kill at The Cat Club (10:30)

ALSO: Beth Hart at The Echo (7pm)
