Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 2/18-2/24

Posted on by .

When I’m sick, I try to do the “right thing” and not go out at night. It’s hard. Then, when I can’t get my music fix live, I reach out in other ways. Let’s just say this weekend, I spent way too much money on CDs and concert tickets. The combination of delirium and withdrawal is simply not good for my wallet.

Hopefully this flu will be gone by Monday so we can get this week off to a good start. Monday night, High Voltage Magazine is co-sponsoring the A House For Lions Show at The Echoplex so if you’re planning on checking this band out one of these Mondays (and you should), this would be the Monday I’d suggest. Also, one of my impulse buys on Friday was the twenty one pilots record. Now I’m even more excited about this band’s gig Wednesday night at The Troubadour.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 12/10-12/16

It’s been an interesting week. Mostly because I haven’t been able to talk now for nearly seven solid days. It really makes you appreciate how valuable one’s voice truly is. This isn’t the first time this has happened. I lost my voice the day my best friend got married and I had to croak out a Maid of Honor speech. I lost my voice in the middle of my teaching a course. Now, I lose my voice when I’ve been given the opportunity to interview the lead singer of my favorite band. You know, I wonder if there is a pattern emerging here…

Anyway, vocal problems aside, I got to see Biffy Clyro last week so life isn’t even remotely close to being bad. I was also treated to KROQ’s Acoustic Xmas last night which meant I got to see some heavy hitters like Garbage, Bush, and Linkin Park as well as personal favorites like Youngblood Hawke, Gaslight Anthem, and The Lumineers. There was also a Gwen Stefani/Gavin Rossdale duet which felt pretty darn special.

Speaking of holiday shindigs, The High Voltage Holiday party is this Tuesday at Silverlake Lounge. We’ve got some great bands, copies of our newest issue, and everyone who comes through the door gets a gift! I’d love to see you all there J

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 7/9-7/15

Posted on by .

I’ve been doing a lot of writing this weekend. I can’t write without listening to music, so I’ve been doing a lot of that as well. After seeing Joe Firstman Friday at WitZend play one of the best shows I’ve seen in a while (from anyone), I’ve got his entire catalog on repeat. I’m also mixing in The Young Roman’s Tiger Child and the live EP Twin Atlantic gave out last week which has a particularly compelling acoustic version of “Make A Beast Of Myself”. Finally, last night, while at The Satellite to see Queen Caveat, I discovered a new band from Portland called Rags & Ribbons so I’m absorbing and slightly obsessing over their album The Glass Masses.

Soon, however, I’ll have to switch over to The Silent Comedy to pump myself up for their show tonight at The Echoplex. I can’t imagine a better way to end the weekend than a TSC dance-party.

Next week starts off strong with a show from Tony Lucca at Room 5. We’ll see how much Tony’s popularity has increased since his showing on The Voice. My other pick of the week might have to be Saint Motel’s record release at The El Rey on Saturday. I’m so proud of these LA locals, rising in popularity to headlining status at The El Rey! There are also several great shows at The Hotel Cafe this week including one by LMN Band Love Tournament of Hearts.

Here’s my full calendar of recommendations:

Monday: Tony Lucca at Room 5 (8pm)
ALSO: Lost Lander and Terraplane Sun FREE at The Satellite (10,11)
ALSO: Miracle Parade at R Bar (?)…be sure to check the R Bar website for the current password to get in

Tuesday: Monsters Calling Home at The Hotel Cafe (10:30)

Weds: Connie Lim and Sonia Rao at The Hotel Cafe (8,10)
ALSO: Roman Candle Wars at Los Globos (10pm)
ALSO: The Dig FREE at Silverlake Lounge (11pm)
ALSO: Andy Clockwise at King King Hollywood (8pm)

Thursday: Sara Watkins & Tom Brosseau at The Largo (8:30)
ALSO: Naia Kete and The O’s at The Hotel Cafe (9, 11)
ALSO: London Cries at The Viper Room (11pm)

Currently listening to all the bands on the Warped Tour line-up…trying to decide if I want to go to Ventura’s date. I’m leaning towards yes, mostly because I want to see Dead Sara, but sadly I feel there are more bands on my “to avoid” list than my “to check out” list (yes, I have made lists). I can’t believe it’s already Sunday eve and despite working most of the weekend, my to do list barely has a scratch. I didn’t get out to too many shows last week, but the ones I saw were phenomenal. The Hours and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds at Royce Hall and Milo Greene and The Civil Wars at The Wiltern were both top notch musical experiences. And let’s not forget LMN’s show tonight featuring Wires in the Walls, Holy Rolling Empire, and Sunken Ships…an excellent night of music!

Despite it being a holiday week, there are still a few promising shows. I’m basically going to have to take it on an hour by hour basis, but those of you fortunate enough to be able to plan ahead, here’s what I’d recommend:
