Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 9/30-10/6

Well, Rocktober is indeed upon us. It would be quite easy to do a show a night all month long and not hit a weak one in the bunch. It also involves making a lot of hard choices and, if your schedule doesn’t permit going to shows every night, a lot of sacrifices. My top shows this week are mostly bigger names: Frightened Rabbit and Augustines, Matt Nathanson and Joshusa Radin, and the rock band that defined my high school years, Travis!

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 8/5-8/11

And once again it’s Sunday night. It doesn’t feel like I’ve
had much of a weekend as I spent most of it sitting in front of my computer,
working. I watched three movies today: The
Bumblebee Flies Away
, Girl
Interrupted
, and Der Krieger und die Kaiserin (The Princess and The Warrior). All of them largely take place in
some sort of hospital or mental institution. I found myself envious of the patients

and I will be able to get to some shows (my much needed respite in this storm
of life).

Kristen’s SXSW ’13 Mix – Part 2 – CHVRCHES, Everything Everything, Emma Louise

SXSW is my favorite time of the year for collecting new artists to watch. Far be it from me to keep these gems to myself. Here are some of bands and songs I discovered this year:

4. Chvrches – “Lies”

Another band I was looking forward to seeing in Austin, but every time I tried, the line out the door was a bit too much of a deterrent. This Scottish electro-pop group sold out the Troubadour in June so fast that the added a second LA show at The Fonda (!). Rising stars for sure.

5. Everything Everything – “Duet”

They ended up cancelling their SXSW gigs, but I was incredibly grateful they kept their LA date at The Roxy. This song took this band from one I’d like to see to one I needed to see.

 6. Emma Louise – “Jungle”

This catchy pop tune from Australian singer Emma Louise caught my ear upon first listen…and didn’t let go. You have been warned.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 12/10-12/16

It’s been an interesting week. Mostly because I haven’t been able to talk now for nearly seven solid days. It really makes you appreciate how valuable one’s voice truly is. This isn’t the first time this has happened. I lost my voice the day my best friend got married and I had to croak out a Maid of Honor speech. I lost my voice in the middle of my teaching a course. Now, I lose my voice when I’ve been given the opportunity to interview the lead singer of my favorite band. You know, I wonder if there is a pattern emerging here…

Anyway, vocal problems aside, I got to see Biffy Clyro last week so life isn’t even remotely close to being bad. I was also treated to KROQ’s Acoustic Xmas last night which meant I got to see some heavy hitters like Garbage, Bush, and Linkin Park as well as personal favorites like Youngblood Hawke, Gaslight Anthem, and The Lumineers. There was also a Gwen Stefani/Gavin Rossdale duet which felt pretty darn special.

Speaking of holiday shindigs, The High Voltage Holiday party is this Tuesday at Silverlake Lounge. We’ve got some great bands, copies of our newest issue, and everyone who comes through the door gets a gift! I’d love to see you all there J

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 11/5-11/11

Last week was such a blur. I think this is mostly because I didn’t sleep very much. When you’re only taking 2-4 hr. “naps”, it can get quite difficult to keep track of things like days…and dinner time. My favorite Danes, terminal, left to go back to Denmark on Friday and I already feel the hole in my life. I often come across music that moves me, but for the people behind the music to be equally as touching…that is truly something special and I feel blessed to have had this band in my life the last month. I was very fortunate in that before I could wallow in their absence for too long, a conveniently timed facebook message reminded me that my favorite Aussie-born brothers, The Kin, are coming to town this week. Thursday night they play The Roxy. It feels like I have been waiting years for these guys to come back to play LA and I would strongly encourage you all to come out and see them Thursday night before they disappear again. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 5/7-5/13

I’m finally getting around to watching the 20/20 piece on Sunset Boulevard featuring Queen Caveat. I’ve already seen me rocking out at The Viper Room and front row at The Roxy.  The piece definitely doesn’t put one of my favorite places in LA in the brightest of lights, but I’m certainly craving some Rainbow fries and live music right now.
