Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/7-10/13

One of my most memorable musical events last year was Filter’s Culture Collide Festival. This week, once again, musical acts from around the world will come together in Echo Park. I already have my list of bands to check out and I wonder which will be the next band to change my life (or at least my musical landscape).

It has been quite a busy week/weekend. I managed to work at least three 12 hour days last week plus catch some great shows (pictures posted soon to LMN’s facebook page). This weekend, we got the Christmas tree up and trimmed with the help of some lovely elves. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 11/26-12/2

As the holiday party invitations start to come in, I’m reminded that it’s time to put my end of year music mix together. For those of you who don’t know, every year I make a mix of all the songs and artists that meant something to me over the year…they are usually accompanied by a story and pictures. I work on this all year round, but the hardest part is pulling it together at the end and finding the time to create and produce the final product (aka Christmas gifts!). For this year’s mix, I had the first “rough draft” done for a couple weeks ago and and I’ve since made a few tweaks, but I’m still not 100% happy with it. However, if my first party is in just a couple of weeks, I’ll need to start manufacturing soon! Or maybe I should just accept the fact that my Christmas gifts will be late…again.

And who knows, maybe there will be a show this month that will change my life and alter the mix entirely (December 6th early show at The Satellite, I’m looking at you!). There are plenty of promising options these week. Here are my picks:

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 11/19-11/25

I can’t believe it’s Thanksgiving week. I wish I could be more excited about it, but since people tend to leave LA for the holidays, there aren’t as many show options. I’d like to say that I’ll be spending the extra time off working on my end of year mix and continuing to fill out my SXSW 2013 spreadsheet, but I will mostly likely be playing catch-up at work. I’m actually quite thankful for the opportunity to do this, so hopefully I’ll be able to make the most of it.

I’m also thankful for a couple notable returns to the scene this week. Josh Kelley back at The Hotel Cafe and Nico Vega returning to the stage after what seems like a very lengthy break. Unfortunately, The No Doubt show that Nico Vega is playing sold out before they were even put on the bill…but just knowing they are playing again makes me happy.

Here are the rest of my show suggestions this week:

Monday: A House for Lions, Irontom, The Record Company FREE at The Satellite (9pm)
ALSO: Belmont Lights, Hot Bodies in Motion, The New Limb at The Hotel Cafe (7,8,9)
ALSO: Rimpau and Drive He Said FREE at Silverlake Lounge (9,10)
ALSO: Monday in the Round at Room 5 featuring Trevor Menear, Griffin Young, Joel Eckels and Kristen Toedtman (9pm)

Tuesday: The Watkins Family Hour at Largo (9pm)
ALSO: a Tribute to ABBA FREE at The Satellite (9pm)
ALSO: Paul and the Kir at Molly Malone’s (9pm)
ALSO: Rachel Yamagata at The El Rey (9pm)
ALSO: The Postelles, Mayday Parade, and The Maine at House of Blues (7:30)

Weds: Keaton Simons and Nikki Leonti at WitZend (7pm)
ALSO: Josh Kelley at The Hotel Cafe (8pm)
ALSO: Half Moon Run at First Unitarian Church (7pm)

Thursday: Happy Thanksgiving!

In the middle of a bit of a work-crisis, so I’ll keep this short. Actually this whole week has kind of been one work crisis after another…and sadly I do not see the end. I did get out Wednesday night to check out rocksters, Leogun, and I am pleased to report I have a new band love from the UK.

Speaking of recent band discoveries, I have a few this week I’d really like to see. Sad Robot continues their Silverlake Lounge residency Monday night and then my favorite band from Culture Collide, Denmark’s terminal, has a show Thursday night also at Silverlake Lounge. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/8-10/14

I’m nearly done with the Culture Collide madness that has consumed the last several days. Today’s block party marks the end of this glorious event which, I must say, is the most fun I’ve had at a festival since SXSW…I think it’s the people. Everyone I’ve met and chatted with has been lovely and the vibe is friendly and music-centric. The festival also gives me a chance to see international acts I might not be exposed to otherwise. My favorites thus far have been the Danish band, terminal, Toronto’s The Balconies, Ewert and The Two Dragons from Estonia, and Scotland’s Admiral Fallow who is, I believe, the first band I’ve encountered that uses my favorite instrument, the clarinet, in their live performance.

Moving on to next week, here is my list of shows I’d love to attend. Top picks would have to go to Canada’s Reignwolf (Jordan Cook) who plays two shows this week and Leogun from London who plays a free show Wednesday at The Satellite. Oh, and if you managed to snag a ticket to the AWOLNATION/Imagine Dragons combo, well, that will be a good show too.

Monday: Reignwolf at The Hotel Cafe (8pm)
ALSO: It’s a School Night at Bardot featuring Royal Teeth (9pm)
ALSO: Immanu El and Jordie Lane FREE at The Satellite (9pm)
ALSO: Tegan and Sara and The Black Keys at The Honda Center (8pm)
ALSO: Florence and the Machine at The Hollywood Bowl (7pm)
ALSO: Monday in the Round featuring Ray Don, Trevor Menear, and Joel Eckels (9pm)

Tuesday: The Balconies at Bootleg Bar (9pm)
ALSO: Reignwolf at The Satellite (9pm)
ALSO: Jared Lee and Taylor Locke & The Roughs at The Viper Room (10,11)
ALSO: Nathaniel Rateliff and Michael Kiwanuka at John Anson Ford Theater (7:45)
ALSO: The Wallflowers with Everest at The Fonda Theater (8pm)
ALSO: JEFF the Brotherhood at The Troubadour (10pm)
ALSO: Immanu El at Central SAPC (midnight)
ALSO: Half Moon Run and Metric at The Greek Theater (7:30)
