Since I am no longer pouring over journal articles every day, I’m upping my dosage of reading for pleasure. This past week I revisited an old friend of mine, Anne Shirley of Green Gables. I hadn’t read any L.M. Montgomery since I was a child and it occurs to me now how influential the notions in these books might have been to my young mind. The necessity of kindred spirits, the value of a vivid and sustaining internal world, an appreciation for the smaller pleasures, and putting a premium on intelligence over external beauty are all lessons from Anne of Green Gables that one might argue are key components of my personality today.
On the docket for next week is a little Douglas Adams. I was lucky enough to attend a screening and panel for the new HBO show, Dirks Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency (loosely based on a couple of Adams’ books) last week. The tease of the first episode got me craving the beautifully random insanity often associated with a Douglas Adams novel.
Music-wise, I’m pleased to report I made a fair number of shows last week and my “current faves” playlist has expanded with new music from Badflower, Young Rising Sons, and Night Riots. Next week I hope to add new Reeve Carney music to the list after seeing him play Monday night at Molly Malone’s. This is a particularly meaningful show for me as many of my fondest early memories of living in Los Angeles revolve around seeing Reeve at Molly Malone’s.
