Many music venues this week are hosting a different kind of event as the Netflix is a Joke Fest takes over Los Angeles. While bands like Flight of the Conchords and Wolves of Glendale lend themselves perfectly to a comedy festival, I’m not entirely sure how Guster or Ben Folds (also part of the event) will fit in.

For my lift, I plan on seeing Milk Carton Kids play tunes of their newest album at Amoeba Records Wednesday night. No act does a better job of making me both laugh and cry in the span of a set.

Only one note needed this week – UK’s King No-One has released their debut album, The Burden of Empathy, and this will be my entire playlist for all upcoming days, weeks, months, etc.  My favorite track from the album rotates, but I’m currently on a “Nosebleed” kick.

After discovering new artists (Greyscale, We Three, Bebe Stockwell), attending two conventions/conferences, opening day baseball, and (finally) making some moves on the job front, I’d call last week a busy yet productive one. I’m working on my SXSW 2026 playlist so I can share my top artists picks. Memorable moments include seeing a few UK artists play their first US shows, a very emotional Switchfoot small club set, experiencing plants make music (yes, of the green and leafy variety) and discovering new acts from across the globe.

One particular night, I was directed to a church to see a French acapella trio, Les Itinérantes, use the acoustics of the space to mesmerize the crowd. The witchy feminine energy was the cleansing boost I needed to get me through the rest of the week.  When I returned to LA, I went to see another trio of women, Tin Angel, use their folk harmonies and musical storytelling to a similar effect. It was hard not to compare the groups singing in different styles and languages but telling similar emotional tales through song.
