This week has been weird and emotional, but it got off to a fabulous start Monday night at The Regent Theater downtown with Frank Turner hosting a rare, seated storyteller event. There were two sets; the second, with The Sleeping Souls accompaniment, traversed romantic entanglements via deeper cuts in previous albums and the opening solo set focused on select songs from the newest album, No Man’s Land. I had listened to the album and enjoyed the folk tales of previously unsung heroes, but what really struck me at the show was Frank’s enthusiastic intros to each of the songs. It hit me by the end of that set that although each of the song’s subjects were women (hence the album title), Frank never once pointed that out, instead claiming them all to be about important “people” throughout history. Be still my little feminist heart! The evening ended, in more typical fashion, with a dance party singalong reminding us all about the importance of rock and roll (a very fitting conclusion to a successful Rocktober) Thanks, Frank Turner!
Next week we have some new November residencies, a BBMAK blast from my past, and Buzzbands.LA celebrating 11 years of supporing the local music scene Saturday night at The Hi Hat.
