Amanda’s SD Concert Calendar 5/13-5/19

This week I was stymied by some allergies (I’m 99.9% sure) so I was stuck at home and pretty much tied to tissues, my bed, and the couch. I’ve recently become hooked on Cold Justice, so I was able to make some great progress with the show but I’m bummed I missed out on some fun last week. I did put World’s First Cinema on today and relived the joy of seeing them last week. So, that was nice.

I’ve got Karin Ann’s “i don’t believe in God” running through my head after a celestial-themed rooftop celebration for her album release/birthday party where the song’s witchy music video debuted. Mark the young Slovakian as one to watch with new album, through the telescope, self-described as her most authentic work yet.

Looking at next week, we’ve got more opportunities to hear some new music for the first time including the new single, “Angels” from Mondo Cozmo who is headlining a very busy Thursday night.

This week I made it out to check out World’s First Cinema! Well, I went specifically to watch this leftie drummer Kristen had told me about years and years ago. She thought I’d enjoy watching him play (she had good reason) and he came through town playing with this band and it was so much fun! They opened for Taylor Acorn, who was also a delight. I especially enjoyed watching her fans in the crowd. However, I seem to be paying for my fun today. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 5/6-5/12

Last weekend I was reflecting on all of my favorite alt-female artists from the 90’s and wishing there was more of that style of music today. Enter Grace Cummings whose artistry and raw talent would have been right at home in that era. The Aussie performs with a power that is subtle and hypnotic until it explodes with a ferocity that demands attention. Grace was in LA last week supporting her new album, Ramona, which was produced by Angelino Jonathan Wilson who joined Grace and her band on stage, tambourine at the ready. I didn’t need to much convincing to believe that this is Grace’s best work yet, but hearing songs from the album live certainly helped.

Moving into the upcoming week, I initially thought it was going to be a challenge to fill the calendar with the Netflix is a Joke festival taking over many of LA’s music venues, but instead it’s full of special event shows including Jessie J acoustic, Sego’s album release, Cage the Elephant at a small venue and Bear McCreary and friends celebrating the composer’s latest work.

To say last week was challenging for me would be a bit of an understatement. Between a dead car battery, tons of driving around, and a shower drain that stopped draining, I didn’t have much energy to go out. I really wanted to see Lioneer last week but I didn’t have it in me to drive some more. I did manage to get into something artsy by attending the MissionFed Artwalk on Saturday to check out one of my favorite jewelry makers. I might have also picked up a bracelet, a print, and some other things. This week will also be challenging in a different way, but I’m hoping to temper that with a show or two.

For some reason, my body decided it needed to fall asleep sometime well after 2am. This meant I had a pretty solid nap today that left me really groggy and slow, hence the later-than-preferred posting time of said calendar.
