We have made it to my second favorite month of the year – Rocktober! Honestly, the first week of this historically music heavy/heavy music month is a bit on the folks-y side but it’s been a weird year all around so I’ll take it! It feels a bit strange for everyone to suddenly be talking about a band you’ve been listening to for many many years, but that’s what seems to be happening this weekend after Linkin Park announced Emily Armstrong of Dead Sara (LMN Band Love) as their new singer. Props to them for stealing one of the best rock vocalists I’ve ever seen, but I’m a bit sad as it feels like I’m saying goodbye to one of my favorite bands. For the lucky ones who scored tickets to Emily’s Linkin Park debut at the Forum this week, congrats!

If those Forum tickets were a bit out of reach, there are plenty of other women who rock playing (reasonable) LA stages. We’ve got Longwinded, Bruvvy, Upsahl, Emi Grace (WFNM Weds) and another fave, Sydney Sprague, if you need some mild to moderate headbanging. There’s also my show pick of the week which is back-to-back nights with The Rescues and Garrison Starr at the Hotel Cafe. Not exactly rock, but also not to be missed.

I’ve been sorting through and organizing old ticket stubs and setlists and have landed in a place of gratitude for all of the amazing shows I’ve been able to attend over the years. The activity has also got me thinking about the waves of “scenes” I’ve felt a part of and wondering if geographic music scenes/communities still exist or if social media has diffused fandom in such a way that playing bar or club gigs weekly/monthly has been replaced by posting videos and building online engagement.

Whether it’s me or the times that have changed, local live gigs are (thankfully) still happening and I continue to do my best to discover and support emerging local artists even if they only play a handful of times a year vs in a single month…

Standing 2-4 hrs. at a concert is still not something my poor knee is able to handle, so I really appreciate those artists that can emote all the way to the seats in the back of the room.  This is exactly what I got last night with the powerhouse duo of Shawn James and The White Buffalo whose back-to-back sets left me with all the feels.

Next week we’ve got top entertainers in Butch Walker and Twenty One Pilots who are sure to reach the cheap seats, but I am most excited about Aussie siblings Sheppard playing the Moroccan Lounge Friday night.
