Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 12/30-1/5

This week we usher in a new year (Happy 2014!). I’ve already started putting my end of year music mix picks up on the site, but I’m a little behind on Christmas gifts…shall we call them New Year’s gifts?  I’ve just been busy at work. It’s amazing how much more you can get done (and in less time even) when no one else is in the office.

Kristen’s 2013 Music Mix – Track 10 – Foy Vance

2013 was another excellent year for music. I put together a little mix of some of the songs and artists that meant something to me this year. Enjoy!

10. Foy VanceI went out of my way to see Foy Vance at The Hotel Cafe earlier in the year when I found out he was opening for Ed Sheeran. He was mesmerizing. After his set, he even took to the alleyway to play a couple additional songs for eager fans. Foy released a new album, Joy of Nothing, over the summer which is a brilliant representation of his performance (a difficult feat). I ended up seeing this Irish bard three times this year.

Kristen’s 2013 Music Mix – Track 9 – Boy

2013 was another excellent year for music. I put together a little mix of some of the songs and artists that meant something to me this year. Enjoy!

9. BoyBoy’s album Mutual Friends is one of my favorite releases of the year. Each and every song is brilliant, but the first time I heard “Boris” I knew this would be going on my end of year mix. I went on a ski trip early this year and Boy provided the soundtrack. Now I hear Boy and think of dancing in the snow.

Kristen’s 2013 Music Mix – Track 8 – James Wolpert

2013 was another excellent year for music. I put together a little mix of some of the songs and artists that meant something to me this year. Enjoy!

8. James Wolpert

There was a solid month or so this year when I listened to almost nothing but Joni Mitchell. Not only did I listen to her music, but I went back and listened to interviews, old concerts and just about anything youtube would give me. I’ve loved “Case of You” since the day I heard Joe Firstman et al perform it live. I am a fan of The Voice and it felt like the show was reading my mind when contestant James Wolpert performed this tune. Instant favorite.

Kristen’s 2013 Music Mix – Track 7 – The Silent Comedy

2013 was another excellent year for music. I put together a little mix of some of the songs and artists that meant something to me this year. Enjoy!

7. The Silent Comedy

My favorite band from San Diego has been doing quite well for themselves the last couple of years, touring the world with bands like The Heavy. Even though we don’t get to see each other as often as I’d like, The Silent Comedy will always hold a very special place in my heart. They released a new EP in 2013 called Friends Divide and “Always Two” quickly became my new favorite song.

Kristen’s 2013 Music Mix – Track 6 – Irontom

2013 was another excellent year for music. I put together a little mix of some of the songs and artists that meant something to me this year. Enjoy!

6. Irontom

Irontom is the band I saw more than any other in 2013. This is due in part to their playing the first Friday of every month at a bar not too far from where I live and in part due to the perhaps unhealthy compulsion I’ve developed to get the live Irontom experience. Singer Harry Hayes is fast becoming one of my favorite front men with his on-stage consumption by his own songs and no matter what mood I am in, Irontom will make me dance and life will be better.  When I go too long without an Irontom fix, I do silly things like write poetry using Irontom song names…

Irontom

Your Mother, Tinkerbell,
was not very large
but she had something to say
about What Will Happen To All The Indie Stars

“Take charge, Boy Born
but don’t gloat, I’m Better
or the next thing you’ll say is
the Lady Got Me
and I let her”

So, My Brothers,
if you find yourself Goin Slow
think Mind My Halo
and go NITRO!

Kristen’s 2013 Music Mix – Track 5 – twenty|one|pilots

2013 was another excellent year for music. I put together a little mix of some of the songs and artists that meant something to me this year. Enjoy!

5. twenty one pilotsTwenty one pilots is my band obsession of 2013. Their self-titled album is my favorite release of the year and spent an inordinate about of time in my car stereo (even more than Biffy!). Their LA show at The Troubadour along with New Politics and Echosmith will go down as one of the best shows I’ve ever attended (yes I mean ever). My SXSW experiences surrounding the band were nothing short of epic. I can’t get enough of their unique mash-up of styles, crazy energetic live show, and lyrics worth thinking about.
