Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 9/16-9/22

I’ve been out of town all week, visiting friends and family on the east coast. It’s been great but I’m exhausted. I haven’t really had access to the computer or internet so that’s been different. Yesterday, I was in Philadelphia. I ate my favorite sandwich, played with a menagerie of animals (cats, dogs, rabbits, turtle…), met up with so many of my old concert buddies, and saw three of my favorite bands. The impetus for the trip was a reunion show for the band Jealousy Curve, a group that changed my life back in college. Seeing them take the stage once again made me heart happy and oh so nostalgic as this band pretty much marked the epitome of certain time in my life.  An added bonus was that the band played with another Philly-fave, Silvertide. It was an epic rock show. And because sometimes life does work out in one’s favor, I was able to catch a pre-show performance from Alright, Junior, another band that is near and dear to my heart. Add in my Thursday night when I got to see two Pawnshop Roses play some old and new tunes, and I pretty much got a taste of all my favorite Philadelphia bands!

This AM, I woke up in pastoral Maryland. Due to the fact that I didn’t see a bed until after 5am, I’m a little foggy…we used to call it the concert hangover. I’ll be back in LA mid-week, but I haven’t yet put much thought into that. Still, I do what I can to help you all in your concert planning…here’s my list:

New Music Tuesday 9/3/13 Featuring Bastille, The 1975, The Griswolds

Well, here’s what I’ve got on my radar this week…

BastilleBad Blood

The record has been out for some time overseas, but this week it was finally released in the US and I adore this band and album, so I thought I’d mention it again. It went up to number 2 on the iTunes album chart so I guess I’m not the only one. I’ve been enjoying Bastille in whatever bits I could get my hands on, but now I’m thrilled that I can finally digest the album in its entirety! From more well-known songs like “Laura Palmer” and “Things
Lost in the Fire” to the deeper cuts I wasn’t as familiar with (currently loving bonus track, “The Silence”), I’d say this is one of those albums to listen to front to back on repeat.

The 1975The 1975

I am very back and forth on this album from these buzzy indie rockers from Manchester. My ups and downs with the band go back to my first viewing at SXSW which didn’t leave me with the best impression. Then I slowly came back around after hearing some recordings. The first time I listened to this album, I was dancing around the room, but by the end of it, I was bored with its “sameness”. I think I appreciate this band and album most in moderation. I took my favorite tracks (“Sex”, “Chocolate”, “The City”) and put them in their own playlist and now I can’t stop listening. Take from that what you will…

The GriswoldsHeart
of a Lion EP

Fun dance rock from an up and coming Aussie group. You can listen to the EP on bandcamp. I think these 4 songs are a taste of great things to come. I denote The Griswolds a band to watch!

Also:

  • Over the Rhine – Meet Me At The Edge of the World
  • Nine Inch Nails – Hesitation Marks
  • Neko Case – The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight, the Harder I Fight, the More I Love You
  • Okkervil River – The Silver Gymnasium
  • North Mississippi Allstars – World Boogie is Coming
  • RDGLDGRN – Red Gold Green
  • Ed Roland And The Sweet Tea Project – Devils ‘n Darlins
  • Frank Turner – Losing Days EP

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 9/2-9/8

Happy Labor Day! I celebrated the holiday with a lovely
birthday BBQ and some Big Bang Theory. Summer is supposed to be over, but this
heat wave doesn’t give me that impression. It seems like the heat is just
supposed to get worse next week which fits with my plans of staying indoors and
writing. Hopefully it will cool down a bit at night as there are some amazing shows
coming up. This week, it’s all about up and coming LA bands. My show pick of
the week would probably go to Meg Myers and The Last Internationale at
Hemingway’s on Tuesday. Every week, The Basement Sessions brings out some great
artists at one of the most literary clubs in town. The best part? It’s FREE!

New Music Tuesday 8/27/13 Featuring Foy Vance, Matt Wertz, Franz Ferdinand

New music! New music! New music!!

Foy VanceJoy of
Nothing

I got a preview of this album last week at Amoeba records and I have to say it is a winner from start to finish. Foy Vance is a captivating performer and the power and emotion he relays on stage are captured quite well in the record. Expect to hear his songs and name on many a soundtrack in the upcoming year.  If you’re in LA, Foy will be at The Hotel Cafe October 28th. Also, this song is up for free download on iTunes so don’t miss out!

Matt WertzHeatwave

The singer songwriter takes a step away from the simple guy with guitar model and towards a more heavily produced sound that goes into more pop and even country territories…with a hint of blistering rock guitar solos. Some of the songs come off as a bit cheesy-90’s pop to me, but you can’t deny the catchiness. I prefer the more toned down, meaningful songs, but I applaud the effort to bust out of the box and shake things up a bit. Matt will be in LA at The Bootleg Theater September 12th. The video for single, “Get to You” is a real treat and I feel explains a lot about the record.

Franz FerdinandRight Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action

I haven’t heard any of the new album, but who wouldn’t be interested in new material from Franz Ferdinand?!? Here’s a taste of the sounds and meaning behind the album:

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 8/26-9/1

This week’s calendar was a bit difficult for me to put
together because I couldn’t quite accept the fact that next Sunday is the start
of September. You might noticed that my Sunday is a bit blank. Honestly (and I apologize
for this) flipping those venue calendars over to September to see Sunday was giving
me too much anxiety so I just didn’t. Let’s just say that September is an
important month for me, work-wise, and what I can accomplish in the next week
will set the tone for the rest of the year.

There is a lot to celebrate in this so called last week of
summer. Wednesday is the last night of our High Voltage residency at The Silverlake
