Last weekend I was reflecting on all of my favorite alt-female artists from the 90’s and wishing there was more of that style of music today. Enter Grace Cummings whose artistry and raw talent would have been right at home in that era. The Aussie performs with a power that is subtle and hypnotic until it explodes with a ferocity that demands attention. Grace was in LA last week supporting her new album, Ramona, which was produced by Angelino Jonathan Wilson who joined Grace and her band on stage, tambourine at the ready. I didn’t need to much convincing to believe that this is Grace’s best work yet, but hearing songs from the album live certainly helped.   

Moving into the upcoming week, I initially thought it was going to be a challenge to fill the calendar with the Netflix is a Joke festival taking over many of LA’s music venues, but instead it’s full of special event shows including Jessie J acoustic, Sego’s album release, Cage the Elephant at a small venue and Bear McCreary and friends celebrating the composer’s latest work.

The Los Angeles Times Festival of Books was this weekend and I was swept away by the panels, signings, and general camaraderie found in the book-loving community. It was a festival focused on books/reading, but there was quite a bit of crossover with music, art, travel, and tea (all things I love). Highlight of the weekend was probably meeting Abraham Verghese (Covenant of Water) whose wisdom and eloquence extends beyond the page.
