Saturday was a blast from the past at Chain Fest, a day featuring some of the great pop/punk bands from my earlier life including the recently resurrected The Summer Set, Mayday Parade playing songs off 2007’s A Lesson in Romantics, and staples from the soundtrack of my youth from Anberlin and Jimmy Eat World. The best part of the event was the seat location, close enough to provide a great view but also allowing me to dance from a seated position (I suffered zero foot, knee or back issues at the end of 8 hours of music)!  Several of the bands vocalized respect for the seated dancing move and my appreciation grew for bands that age along with their fans. The experience felt in severe contrast to other shows I attended last week *cough*Alexander 23*cough*

Next week we have a stacked Monday night highlighted by a TRISHES album release party at the Hotel Cafe, a week of Wolf Alice events, and several Halloween show opportunities (I’ll be spending the holiday weekend hiding out with a couple of dogs who will NOT be put in costume).

We have a new venue alert this week! The Venice West has taken over the space in Venice where Witzend used to be, filling a void in the music scene on the West Side. Anyone else craving live music on the West Side? This one’s for you!

While I look forward to checking out the new venue, it will not be this week as I am overwhelmed by the number of can’t miss shows. Last week was full of great live music, catching up with more friends and watching a lot of winning baseball (my team is on a historic 16 game win streak which will certainly carry them into October). This led into a weekend of listening to nothing but the new Badflower album, This is How The World Ends.

With last week’s return of a very jet-lagged Frank Turner, it feels like maybe the country is starting to let in international artists again. This would be incredibly exciting as my list of UK artists I need to see after discovery via livestreams feels quite long and continues to grow with the ongoing weekly Scruff of the Neck stream on Twitch.

As I slowly build back up to my regularly scheduled concert program, I have been reminded of all the amazing things that come with live music and discovering new artists and songs in the live setting. On the eternal quest to see your next favorite band for the first time, however, you end up seeing…a lot of bands that will not become your next favorite.  I was reminded of that particular joy last week, but honestly, I’ve never been so happy to sit in the back of the room listening to a band I never need to see again. Next week brings with it some very special shows, including the one and only Frank Turner coming all the way from England to play The Echo and a mid-week trip to San Diego to see Dear Boy!
