We have a new venue alert this week! The Venice West has taken over the space in Venice where Witzend used to be, filling a void in the music scene on the West Side. Anyone else craving live music on the West Side? This one’s for you!

While I look forward to checking out the new venue, it will not be this week as I am overwhelmed by the number of can’t miss shows. We have up and comers like cleopatrick, Michigander, and Holly Humberstone as well as favorites such as Wheelwright (Jared of Jared & The Mill), Dear Boy, and Dead Sara…not to mention Alanis Morissette and a very important baseball game Wednesday night. Last week was full of great live music, catching up with more friends and watching a lot of winning baseball (my team is on a historic 16 game win streak which will certainly carry them into October). This led into a weekend of listening to nothing but the new Badflower album, This is How The World Ends.

With last week’s return of a very jet-lagged Frank Turner, it feels like maybe the country is starting to let in international artists again. This would be incredibly exciting as my list of UK artists I need to see after discovery via livestreams feels quite long and continues to grow with the ongoing weekly Scruff of the Neck stream on Twitch.

As I slowly build back up to my regularly scheduled concert program, I have been reminded of all the amazing things that come with live music and discovering new artists and songs in the live setting. On the eternal quest to see your next favorite band for the first time, however, you end up seeing…a lot of bands that will not become your next favorite.  I was reminded of that particular joy last week, but honestly, I’ve never been so happy to sit in the back of the room listening to a band I never need to see again. Today, I wrap up BottleRock, my first festival in well over a year. The event felt very different than in previous years, due to a number of factors. The best part was that it gave me a much needed break. I’m still in the middle of festivities so I’ll have to give you a better recap next week!

This week’s calendar comes to you from Northern California where I’ve already seen a baseball game, purchased a new book from a local bookshop, and eagerly consumed my favorite broccoli.  I would call this a vacation save a last-minute work “emergency” requiring “all hands on deck”…now it’s a workcation I suppose. Musical plans remain intact, however, and these include seeing The Wrecks close out their west coast tour in Berkeley and the BottleRock Music Festival where I hope to finally see New Zealand’s Six60, discover new artists, and catch faves like Mondo Cozmo, Donna Missal, Reignwolf, and Meg Myers.  

Back in LA, it’s the last week of the Warbly Jets residency and the first week the Fonda Theatre is open for live music!

Last week felt almost normal with the amount of show-going. But of course, it’s not really as it was. The pandemic continues to rule, and venues and musicians and audiences all seem to have different ideas about how to keep live music going.  I’m hoping as more venues continue to open and more bands start to tour, there will be greater consistency with regulations and enforcement and show-going will feel a bit safer again.
