It’s been a solid week(ish) for new music releases. Songs off HIMALAYAS’ BAD STAR have been creeping their way into my playlists as the singles have dropped but now we have a glorious 38min 15sec rock and roller coaster. Then pink-haired “Good Bi” Beth McCarthy gets messy in her Hot and Stupid EP/era (check out “Hurting My Own Feelings”). Finally, LMN band love Wheelwright has a new album, a collection of both old and new tunes, called Everyone’s Rich. We can celebrate with Wheelwright Thursday night at Gold-Diggers as part of Lucas Flood Presents: Rebel Rising event.

Celebrated new music from The Wrecks last week with an acoustic set in a bookstore. People keep trying to pair live music and comedy, but I think live music + books is a much more enjoyable combo. The band’s half album, aptly titled Inside, gives us five introspective songs that, while sonically smaller than their indie rock bangers, fit perfectly with the ethos of the band. Personally, I’ve got “I Didn’t Used To” on repeat. The mini-set was a fabulous teaser for their upcoming tour which comes to LA end of May (at The Wiltern).

The Unlikely Candidates’ recent single “Fingers Crossed” is not a new song.  It’s been a crowd-pleaser at the live show for over 5 years and now, finally, the aural gem is available to stream on repeat…and stream on repeat I have! Where these Texan rockers really shine is connecting with their listeners both in the live performance as well as their lyrics. “I need some hope. Something to believe in…” is exactly what I want to be screaming at a show right now. Fortunately, TUC is on a little tour hitting LA Monday night at the Echo.

Last week was a wonderful emotional/musical boost full of magical moments.  There was Canadia rockers, daysormay, ending an already rousing set with an explosive Beastie Boys cover, Barns Courtney’s intimate acoustic set stage dive, Milk Carton Kids sharing the stage with Kenneth’s dog and elevating their hit “Michigan” with an assist from Madison Cunningham, getting to know Vienna Vienna at their soundcheck, Mitchy Collins (lovelytheband) demonstrating his songwriter prowess with new solo material at The Hotel Cafe, and watching a terminator sing along to Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars.”

I’m not entirely sure where to go from there, but next week we’ve got potential with SXSW ’25 selection Twin Shadow playing two nights at the Bansdall Gallery Theatre, brothers Raffoul (Billy and Peter) at The Peppermint Club, and Grace Cummings’ return to Gold-Diggers (her last show there left the entire room transfixed).
