I was at a show on Friday waiting for the headliner to take the stage when the whole room erupted into cheers. The stage was still empty so it took me a minute to figure out that enough people in the room were paying attention to the baseball game on their phones that when the Dodgers won, it caused a massive group moment. Things that can bring strangers into a euphoric group consensus – sports and music – coming together.

While I very much enjoyed being at the Barbarians of California’s debut, I’m not sure I enjoyed it as much as the young man repeatedly flipping off of the stage and into the raging crowd.  Despite the fact that I was sitting a safe distance from the melee, I’m willing to bet that I was more sore post show than that kid…

“When the secret comes out…” – lyrics running through my head after an emotional night at the Hotel Cafe featuring The Rescues debuting music from the upcoming Broadway musical adaptation of The Lost Boys (the coming-of-age vampire movie from the 80’s).
