Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 1/22-1/28

Last week I celebrated one year at my job.  The anniversary unexpectedly put me in a weird headspace, so I did what I do anytime I need a mental re-set and headed to The Hotel Cafe.  I ended up at three different venues, seeing 4 bands and running into friends and making new ones everywhere I went!  I think it was at some point in the middle of a very heart-lifting set by Jared & The Mill that I thought to myself, “as long as I have my music, my friends, and my nights at The Hotel Cafe, I’ll be just fine”.

On the topic of music and friends, High Voltage is in need of some YouTube subscribers. I’ve spent the last few years helping to build the High Voltage video content by going to concerts, conventions, and festivals to interview artists and celebrities.  Check out what we do here https://www.youtube.com/user/highvoltagemag and be sure to click “subscribe” if you’re interested in seeing more.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 1/15-1/21

I realized this week that of all the artists/bands I’ve seen so far this year, about 70% were women or lead by women.  Last week really bolstered the tally between the Lauren Ruth Ward residency, a slew of up and comers at The Peppermint Club (Clover The Girl, Bellsaint, O’Neill Hudson, Fiona Grey), and a sold out show at The Fonda featuring K.Flay.  2018 is most definitely the year of women!

Speaking of the Lauren Ruth Ward residency, if you’re looking to go, I’d recommend getting there on the early side. Last Monday it was raining and the place was still packed.  There are lots of great options for music Monday, so no matter where you end up, it will be a good night. I’m also looking forward to Wednesday night at The Hotel Cafe when Jared & The Mill come to town.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 01/01 – 01/07

Happy 2018! I know 2017 wasn’t the best year for everyone, but I think I made out okay.  It was a year for a new job, new friends, and new adventures including two trips to Europe, a baseball game in St. Louis, and two out of town music festivals!  I’m still working on my 2017 Music Mix, but it was a fairly decent year for music.  2017 marked the discovery of favorite bands like Picture This and Sur, the resurgence of Sir Sly, the continuing growth of Irontom, a reunion for Jealousy Curve, new albums for Barnes Courtney and Nothing But Thieves, the grand debut of Mondo Cozmo, and a very long list of amazing shows.  I think, however, that my band of the year is probably The Wrecks who I believe will dominate in 2018 when they (hopefully and finally) release an album…or at least more than three songs…

I’m not sure what my first show of 2018 will be but we have a few options next week. I’ve got my eyes on Lewis Capaldi at Moroccan Lounge…we shall see!

I hope everyone is having a marvelous Christmas! I’m attempting to do a thing with a stovetop and a steamer as I’m staying at a friend’s place looking after her dog, a 13-year-old dachshund named Pierre.  I’m particularly excited as I am in walking distance of work. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 12/18-12/24

When you are sick enough that an afternoon run to Staples for office supplies proves a challenge, I suppose nighttime rock show is off the table. At least that’s what I’m telling myself as I think about all of my friends gathering at The Troubadour tonight for Dead Sara madness as I sit at home organizing binder tabs.  Headbanging and headaches are not the best combination!

We’ve got one more week of shows before the Christmas drought (AKA week of movie-watching), so I hope I can get out to enjoy it. I’m particularly looking forward to another Creepshow at the Hotel Cafe Thursday night. Line-up hasn’t been announced, but a Creepshow has never left me disappointed.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 12/11-12/17

This week has felt disorienting. Perhaps it has something to do with all of the fires putting everyone a bit on edge. It’s also been a week full of last minute plan changes and if you haven’t guessed it by now, I can tell you that I thrive on a good plan. Speaking of good plans, this week’s musical blueprint shows great potential.  The holiday show season is in full swing. I’d particularly recommend the benefit show at The Hotel Cafe Saturday night (which sadly conflicts directly with my office Christmas party).  Also, if you’ve managed to score a ticket to The Troubadour Sunday night for Dead Sara, count yourself among the very lucky.
