Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/31-11/6

The best Halloween concert is one that does more than merely dress up a band to play an otherwise ordinary show. I’ve been to a few memorable themed shows (Nico Vega’s Witch Hunt comes quickly to mind), and last week seeing the gents of Dear Boy break their typically unyielding mold in the spirit of Halloween will be added to that list.  I guess there is something about wearing skeleton onesies that inspires a musical freedom complete with instrument swapping and the covering of punk rock songs with abandon.

Next week brings with it a new month and several exciting bands from overseas. Top on my list are Walking On Cars and the combo of The Hunna and The Struts who will be sure to dominate the stage of The Fonda Thursday night.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/24-10/30

Since I am no longer pouring over journal articles every day, I’m upping my dosage of reading for pleasure.  This past week I revisited an old friend of mine, Anne Shirley of Green Gables.  I hadn’t read any L.M. Montgomery since I was a child and it occurs to me now how influential the notions in these books might have been to my young mind.  The necessity of kindred spirits, the value of a vivid and sustaining internal world, an appreciation for the smaller pleasures, and putting a premium on intelligence over external beauty are all lessons from Anne of Green Gables that one might argue are key components of my personality today.

On the docket for next week is a little Douglas Adams.  I was lucky enough to attend a screening and panel for the new HBO show, Dirks Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency (loosely based on a couple of Adams’ books) last week.  The tease of the first episode got me craving the beautifully random insanity often associated with a Douglas Adams novel.

Music-wise, I’m pleased to report I made a fair number of shows last week and my “current faves” playlist has expanded with new music from Badflower, Young Rising Sons, and Night Riots. Next week I hope to add new Reeve Carney music to the list after seeing him play Monday night at Molly Malone’s. This is a particularly meaningful show for me as many of my fondest early memories of living in Los Angeles revolve around seeing Reeve at Molly Malone’s.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/17-10/23

The microwave in the house stopped working last night (crackles, smoke, danger, danger). I stood in the middle of my Ralph’s today completely perplexed as to how to shop for the week while remaining within my budget.  I guess I will be eating lots of peanut butter, granola, and crackers with cheese.  Yay.

On the brighter side, this week’s concert calendar pretty much reads like my current “favorites” playlist. Badflower, Young Rising Sons, Dreamers, and The Hunna all have shows in LA this week. I really hope I can make it out to see a few of them. You should too!

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/10-10/16

This week’s calendar has taken more time than usual to put together due to the two dogs I’m currently minding. There is apparently no place to sit down other than my lap which makes typing a bit more laborious.  I’ve had a largely enjoyable week in Maryland spending some time with good friends, enjoying daily doses of tea, reading, and dog-walking, and re-learning a few songs on the guitar.

I do look forward to returning home next week, hopefully just in time for the weather to cool down. I feel like I missed out on a lot while I was gone (free Postmates boba delivery, secret Rooney show, a free Judah and the Lion TV taping…) so let’s go out and have some adventures when I get back, okay?

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/3-10/9

Today, two of the most wonderful people that I met in grad school are getting married in the Washington DC area and I am in town for the festivities. After the wedding, I’ll be staying in rural Maryland, house and dog sitting. I’ll have two Dachshunds and a Great Dane as my chargers. I’m hoping to take some time for long reflective walks, but I’m not sure how many days I’ll be able to stay sane without live music. Fortunately, Irontom will be in DC at the end of the week. I very much look forward to seeing them in a new city.

If I were in LA, there are quite a few shows I’d be looking forward to, the Assemble the Skyline reunion and Coffee Shop Arena Rock night at The Hotel Cafe being at the top of my list.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 9/26-10/2

This weekend was agonizing in a Sophie’s Choice kind of way but I ended up going down to San Diego to spend a few days with Amanda and her adorable dog, Lucy.  Thursday night we were able to see the second show ever from the former Rags & Ribbons trio who now go by Arkivist. The harmonies are still there and they ended the set with an old favorite so I am happy to report that you need to go check them out.  Then last night was one of the more intense The Silent Comedy experiences I’ve had. It was impossible not to get swept up in all the feels and I’m pretty sure I sweated more from dancing to the music than the exercise classes Amanda took me to a few days prior.

Today, I’m heading back to LA to party with Highly Suspect (see recently published article here: http://iamhighvoltage.com/2016/09/22/on-the-rise-highly-suspect/).  But first, a quick stop at the Adam’s Street Fair to see Mrs. Henry and Creature and the Woods.  Tomorrow is my show pick of the week with The Wrecks, July Talk, and Nothing But Thieves at The El Rey.
