Happy 2024! I’m finalizing my 2023 Music Mix and noticing a lyrical trend that suggests maybe 2023 was not the best year for me. I’m hoping 2024 will begin moving in a better direction.  The year is certainly off to a strong musical start as the first week closes with gigs from Beauty School Dropout, Evan + Zane and Jack Garratt. I got a preview of new Jack Garratt material over the summer when I was in London and it was one of the best gigs of my year so I would particularly endorse a stop by the Hotel Cafe Saturday night…

Spotify Wrapped tells me that I should be living in York, UK. This is not terribly surprising given that my playlists are peppered with British rock bands. Topping my list this year were The Hara, Bilk, and King No-One. Now I must plot my return to that part of the world so that I can commune with my music-loving peers!

In the meantime, I am happy to be in Los Angeles where Wednesday night will be a gathering of many familiar faces at the Lodge Room to celebrate Nico Vega’s first headlining show in years. This is not to be missed!

This time of year can be hard and it doesn’t help that the show calendar is lighter. Last week felt so off until Friday night at The Roxy where I went to see We Are Scientists and suddenly the world clicked back into place. These New York rockers blasted through their set of songs celebrating their most recent album, but not discounting their older hits. The band was a massive uplift bringing humor, heart, and reasonably priced merch items to brighten the day.

Rolling into next week, we shall continue the uplifting rock vibes with Mondo Cozmo, Beauty School Dropout, Baby Queen and more…
