Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 11/25-12/1

Last Monday night was one for the books not because I saw several of my favorite bands at multiple venues, but because everywhere I went, I was unexpectedly surrounded by so many of my favorite people.  I’ve been too busy lately and unable to spend enough time with friends and to see so many in one night was simply magical. I bring this up because Thanksgiving is upon us and there is nothing I am more thankful for than all of the amazing people in my life that I get to call friend.

Let’s see if this week can be just as great. We certainly have some exciting show options including SXSW ’13 pick Six60 who are in town from New Zealand. Also, don’t miss your last chance to see November residency acts The Filthy Souls and George Stanford both playing Tuesday night.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 11/18-11/24

I experienced a traditional tea for the first time today. Not tea as in the drink, but tea as in the event.  There was quite a selection of teas present; enough to fill a multi-page coffee table type book. We were also presented with fresh scones, cakes and cookies, mini sandwiches, and an ice cream tea float that also included some sort of rich cream…I’m not sure that I’ve ever consumed more sugar in one sitting. The best part of tea was the company and conversation. Just be warned, if ever invited to tea, it’s a bit like brunch in that you really need to block out half your day.

Now, I’m attempting to cram in the rest of my weekend to do list without staying up all night (a regular thing for me to do these days). I’m really hoping next week will be a bit more normal, which means, fitting in a good show or two…or three… Top on my list include local favorites Irontom and Dear Boy on Monday, a tough choice between Foxes and Tonight Alive Tuesday and a pair of up and comers, Jaymes Young and Sir Sly, at The Echoplex on Friday.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 11/11-11/17

I’m down in San Diego for a Neuroscience convention this weekend and into next week. It feels surprisingly similar to when I was here for Comic Con, but people are dressed a bit differently. Other than a transformative twenty one pilots show in Ventura, I’ve been pretty music-light lately due to conference prep. Top recommendation for next week is definitely The Milk Carton Kids at Largo. Tuesday will be a Revue where they invite other folky friends up on stage and Saturday is a more traditional show. Both will be fantastic.

ALSO: The Fratellis at Fonda Theatre (8pm)

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 11/4-11/10

You guys are lucky that I’m schedule obsessed because this calendar nearly didn’t happen this week. I’m currently drinking straight from the bottle (sparkling cranberry juice…don’t worry) and listening to Joe Firstman’s The War of Women. This does not speak well of my current mental state. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/20-10/27

Last week was a good one: new EPs from The Kin and Hudson Taylor, excellent shows from up and coming acts like Irontom, Kid Karate, The Delta Saints, and Rags & Ribbons, and The Cardinals made it to the World Series! I also learned what shoes NOT to wear to a punk rock show. Frank Turner had me bouncing up and down so much, it hurt to walk for days.

My top pick next week goes to Carbon Leaf who is making a rare LA appearance Monday night at The Hotel Cafe. They’ve had two new releases this year, the celtic-influenced Ghost Dragons Attack Castles and the more Americana sounding Constellation Prize both full of musical gems. My other can’t miss is The Heavy Heavy Hearts at Harvelle’s on Friday. The bluesy-rockers are playing their final show in LA before moving to Nashville.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/14-10/20

I hope everyone was able to make it out to Culture Collide this past week. The energy at that festival is amazing. I was only able to go Friday night, but I packed in as much as I could. Wednesday, I am beyond excited to finally see Nashville’s bluesy-rockers, The Delta Saints who have not been in LA since the release of their fantastic album, Death Letter Jubilee. Then on Saturday, Portland favorite, Rags & Ribbons are back in town with their mesmerizing piano rock.
