Last night I saw band love, Nothing But Thieves, for the first time in about 5 years and I walked away with two primary thoughts; 1 – Rock bands are always better live and 2 – Nothing But Thieves have become too big for me. This provokes contradictory impulses as I want to see the band live again (and again, and again), but I don’t want to walk away disappointed from an over-large venue/crowd and setlist that neglects most of the songs I want to hear. I’m still struggling to land on an emotion as both elation and disappointment pop up in equal measure.

Onto the next I suppose. And by next I mean the long list of promising shows I’ve concocted for next week which include Dead Poet Society, Joe Pug, and the return of another favorite, Nickle Creek who are playing two nights at the Ace Theater downtown.

I am celebrating an anniversary this week – 15 years of going to the Hotel Cafe!  My first night living in Los Angeles, I went to the Hotel Cafe to see The Kin and Dan Wilson and 15 years later, it’s still my favorite place to be! In honor of the anniversary, I’ll be heading to the venue a few times this week. A year or so ago I saw Abraham Alexander for the first time, playing a few songs for a radio show. I was particularly inspired by one song so I went online to identify its name and could not locate it anywhere. Months went by and I felt like maybe I had imagined this song. Fast forward to last week when I attended a listening party for the artist’s album, Sea/Sons, at the Gibson Showroom. About halfway through the album, Abraham gets out the guitar to play a couple tunes including one called “Blood Under the Bridge.” A few notes in and I realize that THIS IS MY SONG! There is nothing quite like discovering a new favorite song or artist live for the first time, but in this case, I was able to have that moment twice!

Getting into the Olympics this week. I’d forgotten how much I enjoy watching curling!
