Well, as promised, I’m currently in the air on my way to Austin for SXSW. It’s going to be one crazy week of little sleep, lots of music, tons of walking, and new adventures and memories. Excited to NOT be in LA this week. Instead, I’ll be in Austin for SXSW. I’ve spent the last month putting my extensive schedule together for next week in TX, but I’ve still got you covered if you’ll be in Los Angeles. I think the show I’m most upset about missing would be Ben Rector and Gavin James at The Fonda Thursday night. Also, my birthday is on Friday (YAY!) so do me a favor and celebrate by going to The Hotel Cafe to see Mount Holly. Consider that my birthday gift to you.

Kristen’s Top 10 Acts to See at SXSW 2016

It’s that time again! Monday AM, Amanda and I are headed to Austin to enjoy what will inevitably be my favorite week of the year at SXSW. My goal, as always, is to discover great new bands that I can see again when they come to LA (and of course share with you!). I’ve gotten a decent head start by listening to and ranking all of the announced official artists. I also have done a fair amount of pre-scouting this year so I know who to really prioritize when faced with 50 different band options every hour.  Whether you’ll be joining us in Texas or just want to know what I’m digging this year, here are my top picks for SXSW 2016:

 

  1. Wild Wild Horses

    I heard this British band’s single, “Demon Days (Do It All Again)” and they were instantly granted a place on my list and after seeing them during their Echoplex residency, they jumped straight to the top! One of those rare bands where every single song hits you at your very core.

  1. Lukas Graham

This year’s “James Bay” has all the appeal and on the strength of single, “7 Years” gets top marks and the can’t miss distinction.

  1. Judy Collins and Ari Hest

I grew up listening to Judy Collins and as a long time Ari Hest fan, this duo, in my estimation, bears the potential to create one of the most magical experiences of SXSW. They have one show announced and you bet it’s highlighted and double starred on my schedule.

  1. AudioDamn!

Germany’s AudioDamn! play fun and catchy rock songs that are aimed to entertain. I had the pleasure of seeing them a few months ago and their talents extend beyond their 4 song self-titled EP.

  1. Tor Miller

Of all the songs on my SXSW mix, it’s Tor Miller’s “Carter & Cash” that gets stuck in my head and won’t let go. I feel like seeing him live will be the perfect antidote to my ear worm problem…or at the very least will have me dancing.

  1. Ninet  – Ninet is an Israli superstar for a reason. I saw her last week and the woman knows how to rock!

  1. Barns Courtney – undeniable voice. Just listen to “Glitter and Gold”
    See him: Saturday 11pm at Latitude 30 (512 San Jacinto)
  1. DNCE  – making crazy fun pop songs one “Cake By The Ocean” at a time
    See them: Thursday 3pm at Waterloo Records (600 N Lamar)
  1. The Virginmarys – UK faves returning to SXSW in front of a new rocking album
    See them: Saturday 5pm at Shady Grove (1624 Barton Springs Rd)
  1. Rooney – I watched The OC along with everybody else…

Well, next week at this time I’ll be on a plane headed for SXSW in Austin. I’m kind of excited but I won’t really get that excited till it gets closer to the time or when I’m actually there. I’m waiting on Kristen’s SXSW playlist and her schedule because those are the keys. Kristen’s schedule tends to be the best guide for finding awesome new music. T-minus one week until leaving for SXSW (aka the best week of my year).  I go back and forth between being incredibly excited and incredibly overwhelmed…with not much in between. My schedule is coming along nicely. It’s mostly full of new and potentially exciting bands to investigate, but there are a few known favorites sprinkled in there to help give me perspective. I hope to make some time this week to put together my top ten list of anticipated acts, so keep an eye out on the site for that.

I guess I spoke too soon about the cool weather in my post last week. Ah well. I wasn’t able to get out and do much of anything this week. I have no idea where the week(end) went but I know I was both busy and tired. I’m (sort of) getting ready for SXSW. Actually, Kristen is really the one doing all the work but I do have to do some stuff. You know, other than pack. I’ve done my research, but I have yet to fill out my official Oscar ballot. I don’t feel like there is a clear Best Picture winner this year which should make things a tad more exciting. I think I need to get a good walk in to finalize my selections before people come over.

In the meantime, planning for next week has me excited about seeing some new bands. We’ve got Rivvrs Tuesday night and Brothers and I on Saturday, two bands I’ve been listening to but have yet to see. And let’s not leave out The Wreks, who I had the pleasure of seeing open for Nothing But Thieves and are playing a free show downtown Monday night.
