Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 12/28-1/3

And thus ends 2015. Honestly, I’m kind of glad for this year to be over. It did have its moments, however, many of which I’ve been posting about on the site as part of my 2015 Music Mix. I have one more big show planned for this year and that will be The Academy Is… down in San Diego. Amanda said something about camping out for it, so this should be quite the memorable experience.

I’m not sure yet what my NYE plans are, but there are some fun musical options in the LA area. I might be partial to the Long Beach New Year’s Eve…we’ll see. I hope you all have a fantastic NYE and I hope to see you out at a show in 2016!

Kristen’s 2015 Music Mix – Track 5 – Highly Suspect

2015 was not the best of years, but it certainly had its moments…most of the good ones involved music. Here are a few of the songs that had an impact on my year.

I was going to say that Highly Suspect’s Mister Asylum was the most underrated album of the year…until it was nominated for a Grammy!?!? I was gobsmacked in the best way imaginable as it is certainly my favorite rock release in 2015. Full of dramatic, heart-pounding rockers, more than a time or two I’ve pressed play on the album and turned the volume waaaaaay up, drowning out my racing thoughts and punching my fists in the air.

Kristen’s 2015 Music Mix – Track 4 – Dark Waves

2015 was not the best of years, but it certainly had its moments…most of the good ones involved music. Here are a few of the songs that had an impact on my year.

Nick Long (AKA Dark Waves) made a huge impression on my 2015. He did a residency at Dirty Laundry and I was there almost every week. I was also at just about every obscure festival and opening act appearance. His EP was my driving soundtrack. There is something about Dark Waves that just cuts right to my emotional core. This is my band of 2015.

Kristen’s 2015 Music Mix – Track 3 – Meg Myers

2015 was not the best of years, but it certainly had its moments…most of the good ones involved music. Here are a few of the songs that had an impact on my year.

Another very highly anticipated debut album, Meg MyersSorry was released this year. I first heard the album’s title song at a festival in San Diego and it was an instant classic, capturing all that I love about Meg Myers’ brand of visceral rock. I was only able to see Meg once since the release of the album, but she continues to dominate the stage putting on one of the most emotionally compelling performances.

Kristen’s 2015 Music Mix – Track 2 – Walking On Cars

2015 was not the best of years, but it certainly had its moments…most of the good ones involved music. Here are a few of the songs that had an impact on my year.

Walking on Cars were my band of SXSW 2015 and stuck with me for the rest of the year. They became one of my High Voltage features and one of my more successful recommendations. “Hand in Hand” was a song I used to lure one of my most passionate music friends into the Walking On Cars fold. I can’t wait for this band’s debut album to come out next year.

Kristen’s 2015 Music Mix – Track 1 – AWOLNATION

2015 was not the best of years, but it certainly had its moments…most of the good ones involved music. Here are a few of the songs that had an impact on my year.

Awolnation returns! Aaron and Co exploded back onto the scene with a new album, Run. The album’s title track may not be my favorite on the album (so hard to choose), but it is the greatest introductory track you could ask for. I got to see the band quite a few times this year, including one particularly memorable bootie-shaking experience in Pomona which was preceded by interviewing Aaron on the band’s spaceship freezer of a bus.

Amanda’s SD Concert Calendar 12/21-12/27

I seem to be stuck with this evolving cold/sinus thing. Just when I think I’ve kicked the stupid thing, it comes back again. Maybe that’s because I go out when I’m feeling good and I probably should have just stayed home instead. I can thank my mom for that gene. This week wasn’t as action packed as last week, which I’m actually happy about. I had my last day of art class on Tuesday so my brain will probably be pretty happy about that but I will miss the class and the people. The other thing missing this week is anything resembling a usual concert calendar due to the holiday. It’s slim pickings out there folks so instead have a happy holiday with friends and loved ones.
