I’m hoooooooome! Well, I’ve been home since Friday after a wonderful Neon Trees filled vacation. It’s not over yet (I have two more shows to attend) and I promise to share the stories! This weekend I’ll be up in LA visiting some friends and going to some more shows. All my vacations are musical. I just can’t help myself. You know how that goes…

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 6/9-6/15

I’m about to head out the door to get to The Hotel Cafe to check out acoustic duo, Penny & Sparrow. I’ve been listening to their album, Struggle Pretty, and I’ve high hopes for this live experience. There are several artists in town this week whose records I’ve been obsessed with, but who I’ve never seen live. On the top of that list is British singer-songwriter, James Bay playing twice this week at Bardot and The Hotel Cafe. We also have Seattle’s HARPS and Levi Weaver whose album, Your Ghost Keeps Finding Me is one of my favorite releases this year.

And that’s just the beginning! This is truly a great week for music discovery so get out there and fall in love with something new. Here are the rest of my recommendations:

By the time you fine folks read this, I will either on a plane or already in Austin. This week kicks off my Neon Trees tour. I’ll be in Austin tonight for the show at Stubbs. The Rialto Theater is on Wednesday, The Cosmopolitan Hotel on Thursday, and Humphrey’s on Friday! I’m super excited for the adventure and mini vacation. I’ve been doing a lot of “career” work this week, bulking up the Linkedin, going on job sites to see what’s available, making lists of my skills, etc. I go back and forth between being excited and panicked, thinking I’ve accomplished a lot and wondering what I’ve done with my life. I actually got a headache this week which is a rare thing for me…it’s hard to stare into the future when it’s so fuzzy!

Happy Memorial Day to everyone out there! I started my day watching a ceremony they were having at a cemetery next to my barn. They were playing old time American music (I’m not really sure what else to call it) and there was a beautiful speech complete with a 21 gun salute. Watching that was a big reminder of how lucky we are to live where we live because we have people who fight for this country. It’s pretty beautiful.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 5/26-6/1

Music and memories often go hand in hand. I have certain artists that I associate with particular traumas in my life because they were playing at the time of the incident. For example, Sheryl Crow goes with that time I got run off the highway in rural PA and Fall Out Boy is paired with the time someone smashed into my car in South Carolina (completely his fault, but of course my car was totaled). I added a new one to the list this week. James Blunt will now forever be associated with that time I fainted at a show. Before anyone asks, I am okay. At least I feel okay now. It’s just kind of sad that I’ll never be able to listen to Back to Bedlam again without feeling a little woozy.

 

So, last week didn’t go exactly as anticipated, but here’s to hoping this week doesn’t have any similar surprises. There are several great show options this week, especially on Wednesday, but show pick of the week must go to Irontom who are playing along with The Janks Tuesday night at Townhouse & The Del Monte in Venice.

New Music Tuesday 5/20/14 featuring Haley Bonar, Crow Bait, and Pujol

Better a day late than not at all!

Haley Bonar – Last Reputation

Haley has been on my to see list at SXSW for two years now, but I have never quite made that happen. Her song “Bad Reputation” caught my ear on her EP last year so I’m interested in hearing what she’ll do with a full length album.

Crow Bait – Sliding Through the Halls of Fate

Crow Bait is a band I just found out about but they have been making some noise (the good kind) in the Long Island music scene since 2011. This is their debut LP and I’m already intrigued. There is something about their sound that is kind of familiar to me and I like it.

 Pujol – Kludge

I first discovered Pujol at SXSW two years ago and really fell in love with them. They have a new album out and admittedly, it’s not what I expected from them but somehow, it still feels like Pujol. You can stream one of their tracks here because I can’t find any music videos newer than 2011.
