Greetings from La La Land this time. I came up here for The Wrecks show last night and am still here for now but I go back home tonight. Last night was super fun but I really wish bands could spread out the fun throughout the year instead of compacting everything in October and bleed it into November. I’m also fighting a tiny cold because going from the hot desert of Vegas to the cold and damp reality of home was too much of a shock, apparently. Let’s check out the madness for this week…

It’s been a weekend of shenanigans in Las Vegas with the When We Were Young festival. There was SO much nostalgia brought on by the likes of Yellowcard, Relient K, Michelle Branch and many more, but there was nothing quite as emotional as the reunion of Something Corporate. Talk about when we were young, this band was such a seminal part of my youth (and my musical tastes) and I still can’t quite believe that I was able to see them again.

Another festival highlight was a more contemporary favorite, The Wrecks who start their LA tour next week with stops at the Moroccan Lounge and the Echo. There are also can’t miss shows from Will Linley, Sam Nelson, and joe P. It’s going to be a busy one…

The Virginmarys released another banger compete with a hard hitting music video, LA rock bands Irontom and Beauty School Dropout both have new albums, and Tom A. Smith put out a new single “Fading Away”, a song I’ve been wanting to get my ears back into since seeing it live over the summer.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/9-10/15

Last night I saw band love, Nothing But Thieves, for the first time in about 5 years and I walked away with two primary thoughts; 1 – Rock bands are always better live and 2 – Nothing But Thieves have become too big for me. This provokes contradictory impulses as I want to see the band live again (and again, and again), but I don’t want to walk away disappointed from an over-large venue/crowd and setlist that neglects most of the songs I want to hear. I’m still struggling to land on an emotion as both elation and disappointment pop up in equal measure.

Onto the next I suppose. And by next I mean the long list of promising shows I’ve concocted for next week which include Dead Poet Society, Joe Pug, and the return of another favorite, Nickle Creek who are playing two nights at the Ace Theater downtown.
