This week, I ventured to Brick by Brick for the first time in my entire life to see Every Avenue. I recently discovered them thanks to a Tidal mix and the band had been on hiatus for 10+ years, until now. I’m so glad I got the opportunity to see them, and while I hadn’t been waiting as long as some fans in the crowd, I still had a great time. The rest of my week and weekend was entirely too short and I’m feeling exhausted for a Sunday but, c’est la vie.

I’m in San Francisco this week celebrating something I love almost as much as live music- Cardinal’s baseball! Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 4/17-4/23

Thoughts on friendship: Friendships are forged through shared experiences, solidified through shared struggles, and maintained with shared memories. I felt this all in an acute way this past week as one of my long-time favorite bands, The Silent Comedy, returned to play some shows in South California and I was reunited with many friends. A shared love of music or a particular band or artist is such a great way to find community and I feel lucky to have many great memories binding me to some great people.

Hanging out with folks after shows can lead to some late nights, however, so next week maybe I’ll just go back to being that oddball loner at the foot of the stage absorbing the music with a goofy grin on her face who leaves right after the show in order to maintain a reasonable bedtime. Looking at my calendar, I anticipate maximum grinning at the Hotel Cafe for Lucy Clearwater and Friends and at the Moroccan Lounge to see Will Joseph Cook!

Hoppy Easter! I got my celebration going Saturday night with Matthew Logan Vasquez at the Moroccan Lounge. After seeing so many younger bands lately with their tik tok friendly tunes, trendsetting lewks, and inflexible setlists, it was refreshing to see a talented band playing purely for the love of it (even if they were having the time of their lives singing about drinking White Claws). Matthew played songs from his various projects, taking notes from the invested audience and even breaking out into a requested tune that would extend beyond the limits of his allergy-impaired voice (do not bring the man any of those yellow wildflowers lining the roadsides). It was the perfect way to celebrate a joyous weekend!

Next up we have an important week for one of my favorite bands, The Silent Comedy who are making their return to Los Angeles (it’s been years!) playing Harvard & Stone Thursday night.

A year or so ago I saw Abraham Alexander for the first time, playing a few songs for a radio show. I was particularly inspired by one song so I went online to identify its name and could not locate it anywhere. Months went by and I felt like maybe I had imagined this song. Fast forward to last week when I attended a listening party for the artist’s album, Sea/Sons, at the Gibson Showroom. About halfway through the album, Abraham gets out the guitar to play a couple tunes including one called “Blood Under the Bridge.” A few notes in and I realize that THIS IS MY SONG! There is nothing quite like discovering a new favorite song or artist live for the first time, but in this case, I was able to have that moment twice!
