Getting into the Olympics this week. I’d forgotten how much I enjoy watching curling! This must be the most nail-biting of all the sports, no?  Next week, in between tense curling matches, I hope to participate in my personal favorite sport, discovering new bands. We’ve got some great showcases with promising artists. I’m particularly looking forward to Cami Petyn and KONG.

My week has been spent keeping it low key after my LA weekend last week. There was some tough PT sessions mixed in there as well so music and shows haven’t really been on my mind. I did purchase a ticket to the Neighbourhood Weekender Fest in Manchester. If James Bay hadn’t been added to the lineup this might’ve been a different story. Still contemplating if I can make it to Leeds and back for the Slamdunk Festival as well. Lots to think about…

I am starting to feel like I have a social life again. This is directly correlated to an uptick in live musical experiences. Coincidence?  I saw a livestream from Gang of Youths this week and David Le’aupepe said “music is a gateway drug to belonging” and this really hit. Music this week led me to new discoveries (hello Evan Bartels!) and inspiring conversations (IS the future of music spoken word indie-pop?) and generally gave me the energy and enthusiasm to get through the rest of my week.  

Another accomplishment last week was more trip planning for a UK adventure which I shall celebrate next week with UK artists JC Stewart and James Gillespie.

I’m powering through the artists from the latest SXSW music announcement. It’s almost maybe feeling like the event might happen in some sort of reasonable in-person way this year, so I am going to be prepared! I’m working on other music-related travel this spring which has been complicated by a Biffy Clyro tour announcement bringing the band to LA (for the first time in 5 years) on a day when I will be out of town thus necessitating another trip to see them in another city (learning towards NYC and Philly, but not ruling out Chicago…). Fingers crossed for safe future travels!

Amanda’s SD Concert Calendar 1/31-2/6

I made it to a show this week! I was having a high energy day on Wednesday and I made it out to Soda Bar to catch Zen Thomas, Lance Rodriguez, and James Spaite. It was nice to see what my body could tolerate and how long I could last. Fun fact: standing is more comfortable than sitting but I do need sitting breaks as well. I do wish I was able to catch more of Zen’s set (I thought it started at 8 but that apparently was not the case) and I wish the Soda Bar would stop cranking the air conditioner up after 9pm when there are not enough bodies to warrant that kind of chill. But all in all, it was nice to experience and know that I can do it! Hooray for progress! San Diego also got some exciting show announcements including Biffy Clyro and Almost Monday, both at the Music Box but let’s see what’s coming this week.
