I spent mine with a Castle marathon (I forgot how much fun this show is!) and then comforting my dog when the neighbors set off fireworks. Ah well. Ready or not, 2022 here we come! I’ve spent a lot of time in the last few days listening to music but focusing on older tunes rather than new music or up and coming artists. Spending time in past years instead of this new one has been calming. There is more anxiety around music these days, especially seeing it live. Every day you have to ask yourself questions like Is the show still happening? or Is it safe? Then there is the strategizing: Should you go to the show on Monday or skip it to ensure you’ll be good to go to the show on Thursday? I’m hoping as we get further into the year these questions will become easier to answer.

Amanda’s SD Concert Calendar 12/27-1/2

I hope everyone is taking the time to enjoy their respective holidays! Mine was super low key and involved a Harry Potter movie marathon and Chinese food. Not at all mad about it. On a more personal note, each week I’m feeling better and more like myself, which is very thrilling! Big milestones include driving around for an hour and spending two hours at the barn before all the rain. I’m looking forward to the new year with some new shows and a healed spine.

I can’t believe 2021 is over this week!! Completely blows my mind that another year has already gone. Despite ending the year with surgery and being mostly stuck in bed, I had some pretty big highlights! Highlights include but aren’t limited to; two rounds with The Silent Comedy at Petco Park, The Milk Carton Kids at the Belly Up, Almost Monday at the Music Box, Badflower at multiple locations, The Wrecks birthday week, Chainfest at Five Points, Colony House (!!!) at the Belly Up, Brad Paisley (bucket list artist!), multiple Dear Boy shows, Dead Sara at the Roxy, Plague Vendor at the Casbah, and I’m sure there are others in there too. Whew. Bring it on 2022!

I can’t believe the end of the year is upon us already. Well, we technically have one week left but it’s basically the end. I’m not entirely sure where the year went, I’m fairly sure it’s still 2020. Or maybe I’m mentally stuck in 2018 even though I’d love to go back to 2010, musically speaking. Either way, I might be ending my year mostly stuck in bed but I’m always thankful for a few key highlights from the year. I’m not going to wax poetic in this post since there’s still one more week left in 2021. I’ll save that for my next post.

This year has been bereft of the usual holiday soirees, but I did go to the Music with Friends show at the Hotel Cafe which featured some powerhouse vocalists who did bust out a festive tune or two. I also managed to attend the Jessie J show earlier in the week which was an experience special enough that I can attribute it to the Holidays. Today, The Milk Carton Kids Livestream had me smiling. They ended with a uniquely Milk Carton Kids rendition of “O Holy Night”, one of my favorite Christmas songs.

I have a feeling there will be an increase in livestreams for the rest of the year and beyond as we deal with another wave of this pandemic. Hopefully, it won’t take as long to figure out how we can safely return to our shows. In the meantime, here’s what we’ve got:

My body feels a bit broken from all the walking I did last week on my “winter break”. A trip to Chicago did involve a few stray snowflakes, ice skating, and plenty of Christmas lights, but mostly I was there for some music including an intimate warehouse set from Morgxn, 2021 faves Cleopatrick, Badflower playing songs of their Temper EP (the best!), my first time seeing the incredible Evanescence, and a special holiday show staring Sarah Brightman.

This week, I will be particularly grateful for my car and sitting in traffic to get to shows instead of walking miles and miles after busses and trains decide not to work properly. We’ve got Upsahl at It’s a School Night, The Wrecks opening for The Driver Era, and a special holiday edition of Music with Friends at The Hotel Cafe, among other choice musical options:
