Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 4/15-4/21

I didn’t get to go to Coachella this weekend and I’m still quite sad about that (especially since Biffy Clyro’s set was not including on the Coachella livestream), BUT I did spend the day yesterday in the Palm Springs/Coachella area so I was able to get in some music and bask in the desert sun. The best part of the experience was the Coachella after-party, Neon Carnival. Carnival games (I won a stuffed black panther named Carly) and rides (Ferris wheel!), plus a raging dance floor where the celeb-filled party kept going into the wee hours. Let’s just say that today, I am tired. Also, I saw Clint Eastwood.

Still, excited about more music this week. I think what I’m most looking forward to (seeing that I failed to get tickets to The El Rey on Tuesday) would be the arrival of UK’s Young Guns to the LA area. Not sure I can make it to Pomona on Friday, but seeing them play acoustic Saturday afternoon at Sound Check Hollywood has the potential for greatness…

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 3/11-3/17

A teensy bit overwhelmed by everything I still have to do for SXSW. We’re leaving tomorrow. I’ve got my incredibly overwhelming schedule, my extra pair of comfy shoes, and my camera so I should be good, right? Oh, did I mention I got sick last week and lost my voice? Still recovering from that so…yay. Tonight is The Silent Comedy at The Casbah down in San Diego. I’m sad The Silent Comedy boys won’t be at SXSW this year, but I couldn’t be more grateful for an SD show conveniently booked the night before I need to catch a plane from SD…also, I have plenty of other artists to track down in Austin (my top picks list should be coming out tomorrow).

If you’re staying in LA this week, you have a lot to look forward to as well. There are some really good residencies this month. Sad Robot Tuesdays at Hemmingway’s, David & Devine at The Hotel Cafe Weds nights, and Sonia Rao and Elliot Yamin at WitZend every Thursday. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 11/26-12/2

As the holiday party invitations start to come in, I’m reminded that it’s time to put my end of year music mix together. For those of you who don’t know, every year I make a mix of all the songs and artists that meant something to me over the year…they are usually accompanied by a story and pictures. I work on this all year round, but the hardest part is pulling it together at the end and finding the time to create and produce the final product (aka Christmas gifts!). For this year’s mix, I had the first “rough draft” done for a couple weeks ago and and I’ve since made a few tweaks, but I’m still not 100% happy with it. However, if my first party is in just a couple of weeks, I’ll need to start manufacturing soon! Or maybe I should just accept the fact that my Christmas gifts will be late…again.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 11/5-11/11

Last week was such a blur. I think this is mostly because I didn’t sleep very much. When you’re only taking 2-4 hr. “naps”, it can get quite difficult to keep track of things like days…and dinner time. My favorite Danes, terminal, left to go back to Denmark on Friday and I already feel the hole in my life. I often come across music that moves me, but for the people behind the music to be equally as touching…that is truly something special and I feel blessed to have had this band in my life the last month. I was very fortunate in that before I could wallow in their absence for too long, a conveniently timed facebook message reminded me that my favorite Aussie-born brothers, The Kin, are coming to town this week. Thursday night they play The Roxy. It feels like I have been waiting years for these guys to come back to play LA and I would strongly encourage you all to come out and see them Thursday night before they disappear again. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/1-10/7

Too much. There is just too much going on this week. I could live at The Wiltern and see Ed Sheeran, Foxy Shazam, The Head and The Heart and Jason Mraz all in one week! It’s also a good week to be on the East Side for one of the most fun (and most affordable) music festivals, Filter’s Culture Collide (http://culturecollide.com/). There are some out of country bands playing I’ve been wanting to see for years! And Let’s not forget the usual amount of greatness featured at The Hotel Cafe…the start of October residencies from Harper Blynn and The Young Romans, an intimate Laura Marling show. I could live at that venue as well. Even considering all of that, my show pick for the week would have to be The Milk Carton Kids Thursday night at Largo. If you’ve ever seen this captivating duo, you’d know why.
