Too much. There is just too much going on this week. I could live at The Wiltern and see Ed Sheeran, Foxy Shazam, The Head and The Heart and Jason Mraz all in one week! It’s also a good week to be on the East Side for one of the most fun (and most affordable) music festivals, Filter’s Culture Collide (http://culturecollide.com/). There are some out of country bands playing I’ve been wanting to see for years! And Let’s not forget the usual amount of greatness featured at The Hotel Cafe…the start of October residencies from Harper Blynn and The Young Romans, an intimate Laura Marling show. I could live at that venue as well. Even considering all of that, my show pick for the week would have to be The Milk Carton Kids Thursday night at Largo. If you’ve ever seen this captivating duo, you’d know why.

Now that I’m exhausted just thinking about what I’m going to do, I’ll let you look at my approved show list so you can start planning your picks. My top selections for The Culture Collide Festival will be noted (*). Remember, one ticket will get you into everything all week!

Last night I went to the ballet! I love live dance performances…definitely something that I don’t attend as often as I’d like. This one was a contemporary ballet, put on by the Silverlake Contemporary Ballet. It was a modern re-telling of Swan Lake set in Silverlake. The dancing was gorgeous and the adaptation was quite inventive (there was a hipster couple dancing at a bar). There was also live on-stage painting of the back drops for the sets. The best part (and honestly the big draw for me) was the live music. Three great LA bands (The Young Romans, Races, and Holly Conlan) each provided the music for an act. The dancing was definitely more exciting for me when it was fueled by my favorite songs like The Young Roman’s “Tiger Child”. There was also a few exciting covers like Races’ lovely rendition of Joni Mitchell’s “Case of You” (one of my favorite songs and perfect for a scene about an obsessive, unhealthy attraction).  Tchaikovsky didn’t get left out entirely, as each musical act also did their own re-working of the classic Swan Lake piece. If you’re looking for something to do tonight, I’d highly recommend attending the final performance of Swan Lake (http://silverlakeballet.com.s32864.gridserver.com/?p=114).

This weekend I was down in San Diego for The San Diego Music Thing. SDMT is the half-way marker of the year for SXSW and in a sense it is a mini version of my favorite music conference. I love walking the streets of North Park hopping from venue to venue sampling artists both new (to me) as well as old favorites. Despite the ubiquitous sound issues and the frustrating scheduling conflicts, I’d call the weekend a success. I caught some of my favorite LA bands like Queen Caveat and NO, some great out of town bands including Austin’s Ume, Seattle’s Ben Union and San Francisco’s The Stone Foxes and, of course, fun SD bands such as Dr. Seahorse and The Howls. Good times!

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar 2/6-2/12

Well…that was certainly an eventful weekend. Friday night I had a very ominous feeling before going to the El Rey to join a friend for Adam Gontier (of Three Days Grace) and Martin Sexton. At the end of the evening, I ended up in fascinating company at my fave late night eatery and I thought my gut must have been waaay off. Three hours later, sleepless and in the ER with a friend, my earlier instincts were justified.

Saturday, I cancelled my plans to participate in Tyrone Well’s music video shoot in Venice for sleep’s sake. Then it was an evening at The Rainbow Room and The Hotel Cafe with great food, friends, and music (the three essentials of any successful evening).

Today I had to cut myself off from the world and lock myself in lab as I had entered the weekend woefully behind on an important deadline at work and that I have two big presentation to give in the next seven days. This week is going to be rough…thankfully there are a few choice shows to pull me through. Here are my options:

Monday: Youngblood Hawke, Lady Danville, Useless Keys FREE at The Satellite (9pm)
ALSO: Paris Carney and Songwriters in the Round at Room 5 featuring Kyler England, Sweet Talk Radio, Shane Alexander, and Joel Eckels (8,9)

Tuesday: Queen Caveat at Hemingways (11pm)
ALSO: The Elizabeth Kill at Skinny’s Lounge in NOHO (9pm)
ALSO: Makepeace Brothers and friends Acoustic Nights at WitZend (9pm)
ALSO: Marcus Very Ordinary at The Central (8pm)

Weds: Millow, Marketa Irglova, Jake Newton and Garrison Starr at The Hotel Cafe (8, 9:30, 10:30)
ALSO: Roman Candle Wars and Red Circle Underground at Bootleg Bar (9,10)
ALSO: Aunt Martha and Meiko at Saint Rocke (8pm)

Thursday: Harper Blynn at The Hotel Cafe (9pm)
ALSO: Ben Kweller FREE at Amoeba (7pm)
ALSO: Kris Allen at The Mint (9pm)
ALSO: Oh Darling and Y Luv at The Satellite (9pm)
ALSO: Joss Stone at The Troubadour (8pm)

Friday: Teitur and Aunt Martha at Largo (8pm)
ALSO: Graham Colton and Abandoned Pools at The Viper Room (9,10)
ALSO: Javier Dunn, Parker Ainsworth, Rocco Deluca, and Juke Kartel at The Hotel Cafe (8pm)
ALSO: Dr. Dog at The Orpheum (9pm)
