Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/7-10/13

One of my most memorable musical events last year was Filter’s Culture Collide Festival. I had a blast running around that part of town collecting pins and discovering bands like Royal Teeth, Icona Pop, and terminal. This week, once again, musical acts from around the world will come together in Echo Park. I already have my list of bands to check out and I wonder which will be the next band to change my life (or at least my musical landscape).

Other favorites playing this week include The Kin who will take the stage at The Staples Center (!!!) opening for Pink, Zane Carney whose debut EP Confluence deserves a good listen or two, and Queen Caveat who are continue their residency at one of my favorite Hollywood spots, Hemingway’s.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 8/5-8/11

And once again it’s Sunday night. It doesn’t feel like I’ve
had much of a weekend as I spent most of it sitting in front of my computer,
working. I watched three movies today: The
Bumblebee Flies Away, Girl
Interrupted, and Der Krieger und die Kaiserin (The Princess and The Warrior). All of them largely take place in
some sort of hospital or mental institution. I found myself envious of the patients
which I suppose tells you something of my current mental state.  Hopefully next week won’t be so overwhelming
and I will be able to get to some shows (my much needed respite in this storm
of life).

Fortunately there are some great musical opportunities
coming up including exciting lineups for Monday Monday at Room 5 and The

Happy Monday! I’m moving a little slow today after being out to see Free Energy last night at the Casbah. Last week was pretty rough but there’s a lot of music out there to keep those blues away. Tonight is the third night of the Steelwells residency at the Casbah and if you haven’t made it out to see them yet, do so before it’s over next week! I’m clearly putting myself through the mental ringer today. After
a meditative morning, I read a couple chapters of Olive Kitterage, watched Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia and now I’m listening to the new Matthew Mayfield EP, Irons in the Fire, on repeat. I think
this combination would leave anyone a bit on the contemplative and depressed
side. Before I write an inspired opus on suicide, the end of days, and damaging
relationships, I’m just going to direct you to the more uplifting musical
options for the week listed below. Once again, my top pick is the delectable
Queen Caveat playing Monday night at The Satellite. This week’s theme is the 80’s.
I’ve been told this means I need to dress in bright colors, but I’m not sure my

I guess that’s what happens when you have to be a responsible adult and can’t behind the guise of schoolwork. I did make it out to see Get Back Loretta on Friday at the Casbah but I’m having a hard time getting back into my usual routine. Hopefully this week the boat will right itself.

I’m still riding that post-SXSW high. I’ve been stealing minutes here and there to process all the pictures and songs, bring faces back to the pile of business cards, and write and reflect on everything that happened so that I won’t soon forget.  I’ve also taken some time this week to catch up with friends and share my stories. I was only gone a week, but it seems like it was much longer based on all that happened while I was gone. Hopefully (or maybe not) this week will feel a bit more routine. There certainly are a number of shows inhabiting my week’s schedule. Monday Night, Nico Vega plays a free show at Universal City Walk, Tuesday is Sad Robot’s last residency date at Hemmingway’s, Wednesday is The Milk Carton Kids at Largo, etc. etc.
