Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 1/16-1/22

Currently watching The Golden Globes and I have come to the conclusion that I really don’t know much about contemporary popular culture. I’m incredibly frustrated because all the commercials for interesting new TV shows give their premiere date based on something called “the super bowl”. Okay, I know what The Super Bowl is (unfortunately), but I have no clue when it is. Can you please give me an actual date associated with these shows? Not that I’ll time to watch them…

Listening to all the nominees for the best films and TV shows of the year, I realize how out of tune I am with these things. I think I’ve seen all of two movies that were mentioned the entire evening and I had no clue Matt LeBlanc or Kelsey Grammar were doing TV again.  Also, when did my favorite movie stars like Julianne Moore and Kate Winslet get so old?

Sorry for the extracurricular rant. I might know more about these things if I didn’t spend my every spare moment going to shows, listening to music, writing about music, and hanging out with people talking about music, etc. But honestly, I love my life and wouldn’t have it any other way…

HoHotel Cafe Holiday Benefit Show- Night 2 Recap

The annual Hohotel Cafe holiday benefit show is always one of my favorite events of the year. Hotel Cafe artists come together to play a mix of seasonal tunes and originals in a rapid-fire manner, each taking the stage for only a song or two, playing solo or inviting up friends to fill out a make-shift band. The two day event featured the likes of Cary Brothers, Butch Walker, Priscilla Ahn, Meiko, Joe Purdy, Laura Jansen and SO many more. This year, I was only able to make one of the two days, but the night will go down as one of the best evenings of music I experienced all year.  It was one stellar act after another with many fun surprises and special guests. Just when I thought it couldn’t get better, it did. Over and over again. By the end of the evening, even before Butch invited his friend Alecia Moore (AKA Pink) to the stage, I was so overwhelmed, my continuously blown mind seemed to be leaking out of my eyes. Seriously, the beauty and magic of the music had moved me to tears.
Going into detail on the evening would take a book, so here are some pictures. Put your cursor over the pic to more details or fun stories:

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 12/12-12/18

Last Friday night, I had another one of those epic evenings on the Sunset Strip. I started at The Viper Room to see San Diego’s Kevin Martin. Then I ran to The Key Club to catch Jon McLaughlin and Stephen Kellogg and The Sixers with what must have been one of the most polite audiences I’ve ever been a part of. In drastic opposition, I stopped by The Roxy to witness some of the magic that is Camp Freddy. This week’s special guests included Neon Trees, Linda Perry, Sebastian Bach, Paul Stanley (KISS), and Fred Durst. I was going to head back to The Viper for the after party, but got sidetracked by some friends and pizza at Frankie and Johnny’s. Nights like these remind me why I love The Sunset Strip.

Monday night I’ll be back on The Strip for High Voltage Magazine’s Holiday Party at On the Rox. This will be the first of many holiday parties/charity events going on this week featuring some great artists and culminating in one of my favorite events of the year: The Hotel Cafe’s two day holiday party. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/24-10/30

Today I’ve been busy watching the baseball game (Go Cardinals!), grading exams, and trying to ignore this sore throat that’s been building over the last few days. There is just too much going on in my life to get sick!  Last week was fairly epic musically. I made it to at least one set a night, saw several of my favorite bands (Imagine Dragons, Harper Blynn, Lakes, etc), and even got in a couple top notch national acts (St. Vincent is a marvel).

This week marks Youngblood Hawke’s last residency date at The Satellite, so if you haven’t caught them yet, don’t miss it (and bring your dancing shoes). It’s also week two of Harper Blynn’s Hotel Cafe residency. I still can’t believe how lucky we are to have these NYC boys with us until Thanksgiving!

Weds: Harper Blynn and Cary Brothers at The Hotel Cafe (9pm)
ALSO: Ari Shrine at The Mint (8pm)
ALSO: Austin Hartley-Leonard at The Foundry on Melrose (9pm)

Support from some great local groups, The Shakers, Of Verona, Hello Vegas. This is another get your tickets now moment. Go here:  http://www.ticketweb.com/t3/sale/SaleEventDetail?dispatch=loadSelectionData&eventId=3898445

Finally, with the unfortunate cancellation of Sunset Junction this weekend, you might be at a loss for what to do. No sign (yet) of a rescheduled The Belle Brigade/Rooney/Hanson show on Sunday night, but there are some last minute shows popping up that might help fill the void.

* Milo Greene will be at The Hotel Cafe Saturday night. This is a new band love of mine so this will be an amazing show! Don’t miss it

* Helmet Saturday night at The Viper Room

* Dangerbird Records (in Silverlake) is hosting some of my favorite artists that were bound for the Sunset Junction Stage on Saturday afternoon from 12-6pm. Artists include Milo Greene, Butch Walker, Chasing Kings, and Holly Conlan. For more info go here: http://www.987fm.com/pages/closetohome.html?article=9023691

* you can venture to Long Beach for another festival. BuskerFest features some great bands like Everest, Jay Buchanan, and new LMN discovery Korey Dane. For more info: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=186777321372614

That’s all I got for now! Go buy your tickets and I’ll see you at the shows!!
