Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 4/8-4/14

Watching some season 1 Veronica Mars in honor of the super successful Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the VM movie. I’m excited (and yes, I pledged). I’ve seen these episodes so many times, it’s the perfect background for getting some work done.

Speaking of work, it’s been overtime for me lately, so I haven’t been going to as many shows. There are some good ones next week too.  I’m most excited about Curtis Peoples’ record release show on Wednesday at The Roxy. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 4/1-4/7

Happy Easter! After a long and tiring week, it is really nice to relax and celebrate. When I moved to Los Angeles 5 years ago, one of the things I knew I would miss would be sharing these big holidays with my family, but I’m pretty sure that first year celebrating Easter in LA was when I realized what a great new family I had made here. And in the subsequent years this gathering has become my yearly reminder of how many wonderful and inspiring people I have since met and claimed as my own. I’m pretty sure this year is our largest gathering yet. I mean, the leg of lamb my roommate brought home yesterday…well, I wasn’t even sure it would fit in the oven!

I hope to extend my celebratory mood into the week with the help of some excellent shows. I think the two I’m most looking forward to are the amazing string of acts at The Hotel Cafe Wednesday and Sunday nights. People often ask me what my favorite venue in LA is and I have to say The Hotel Cafe because there is no other venue that can so consistently put together solid lineups from front to back. As much as I venue hop, sometimes it’s nice to see a bunch of your favorites all in one place…

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 3/25-3/31

I’m still riding that post-SXSW high. I’ve been stealing minutes here and there to process all the pictures and songs, bring faces back to the pile of business cards, and write and reflect on everything that happened so that I won’t soon forget.  I’ve also taken some time this week to catch up with friends and share my stories. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 3/11-3/17

A teensy bit overwhelmed by everything I still have to do for SXSW. We’re leaving tomorrow. I’ve got my incredibly overwhelming schedule, my extra pair of comfy shoes, and my camera so I should be good, right? Oh, did I mention I got sick last week and lost my voice? Still recovering from that so…yay. Tonight is The Silent Comedy at The Casbah down in San Diego. I’m sad The Silent Comedy boys won’t be at SXSW this year, but I couldn’t be more grateful for an SD show conveniently booked the night before I need to catch a plane from SD…also, I have plenty of other artists to track down in Austin (my top picks list should be coming out tomorrow).

If you’re staying in LA this week, you have a lot to look forward to as well. There are some really good residencies this month. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 12/10-12/16

It’s been an interesting week. Mostly because I haven’t been able to talk now for nearly seven solid days. It really makes you appreciate how valuable one’s voice truly is. This isn’t the first time this has happened. I lost my voice the day my best friend got married and I had to croak out a Maid of Honor speech. I lost my voice in the middle of my teaching a course. Now, I lose my voice when I’ve been given the opportunity to interview the lead singer of my favorite band. You know, I wonder if there is a pattern emerging here…

Anyway, vocal problems aside, I got to see Biffy Clyro last week so life isn’t even remotely close to being bad. I was also treated to KROQ’s Acoustic Xmas last night which meant I got to see some heavy hitters like Garbage, Bush, and Linkin Park as well as personal favorites like Youngblood Hawke, Gaslight Anthem, and The Lumineers. There was also a Gwen Stefani/Gavin Rossdale duet which felt pretty darn special.

Speaking of holiday shindigs, The High Voltage Holiday party is this Tuesday at Silverlake Lounge. We’ve got some great bands, copies of our newest issue, and everyone who comes through the door gets a gift! I’d love to see you all there J

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/8-10/14

I’m nearly done with the Culture Collide madness that has consumed the last several days. Today’s block party marks the end of this glorious event which, I must say, is the most fun I’ve had at a festival since SXSW…I think it’s the people. Everyone I’ve met and chatted with has been lovely and the vibe is friendly and music-centric. The festival also gives me a chance to see international acts I might not be exposed to otherwise. My favorites thus far have been the Danish band, terminal, Toronto’s The Balconies, Ewert and The Two Dragons from Estonia, and Scotland’s Admiral Fallow who is, I believe, the first band I’ve encountered that uses my favorite instrument, the clarinet, in their live performance.

Moving on to next week, here is my list of shows I’d love to attend. Top picks would have to go to Canada’s Reignwolf (Jordan Cook) who plays two shows this week and Leogun from London who plays a free show Wednesday at The Satellite. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 8/13-8/19

Vacation is over. The Olympics are over. All the work I didn’t get done because of vacation and The Olympics is piling up. I was in a pretty dismal state until I looked at my upcoming music calendar. So much to look forward to and keep me going! This week, I’m particularly excited about Birdy at The Roxy on Monday, The Dunwells at The Hotel Cafe Tuesday, and Danielia Cotton at Room 5 on Weds. LMN’s new Band Love, The Neighbourhood, also plays twice this week, Monday at The Echo and Tuesday at The Troubadour. Then, let us not forget that it is Sunset Strip Music Fest (SSMF) week! For the full schedule and line-ups there, check out the website (http://www.sunsetstripmusicfestival.com/).
