Kristen’s Concert Calendar: 5/10-5/16

It’s Carney Week! Saturday is their big show at the El Rey. They are moving to NYC (yes, it’s really happening this time) to be a part of Spiderman on Broadway. They will be gone for awhile. As the first local LA band I fell in love with, this is a big deal to me. The apocalypse could be coming and I would not miss this show. Their first full length CD, Mr. Green Vol. I, also comes out this week (May 11th). So even if you can’t come to the show on Saturday night, you can still celebrate Carney week, by going out and getting a copy of the CD (you’ll want an actually copy as the artwork is brilliant).

If you’d like to celebrate Carney week, I’ve earmarked daily suggested activities along with the rest of the amazing musical events happening this week (and there are quite a few good ones this week)…

My Apologies

Hi Cool Cats!

I realize I have been off the radar for awhile (I blame the weather for getting me sick!) and I feel like I’ve been letting down the SD scene. To be honest, I haven’t really heard of much of anything going on this week. I can tell you that everyone and their mother has decided to have a show this Saturday. I’ll get to that in a minute…

Tonight: Nothing offhand but there is a $5 show at the Casbah so you can’t really go wrong there…

Friday: Bad Religion @ House of Blues San Diego

Saturday: Patrick Norton @ Soma @7:00  $8
~Sight and Sound featuring- The Softlights, Shapes of Future Frames, Beat Panther, Gayle Skidmore and DJ Soo Cal $10 (or free before 7:30) @ Queen Bee’s in North Park
~Mr. Mustard, Wild Child (Doors concert recreation), and Have a Cigar @ The Belly Up $16 or $18 at door (this is a staff pick show!)
~River City @ Tin Can Alehouse $3
~Rio and Still Ill (cover bands!) @ The Casbah $10

Sunday: Nothing again. Consider it a day of rest 🙂
Hopefully I will have a full schedule for you next week! I can already tell you there are a bunch of shows coming up! Indie Fest featuring Endoxi, Gregory Page, and Metric on the 27th (with indie films screening on the 26th) as well asBamboozle on the 27th and 28th with AFI and Something Corporate as well as The Silent Comedy record release on April 2nd! But don’t worry, I’ll have it out in a nice format so you can read it!

Several Noteworthy Videos

So I’ve come across several videos of note this week. All of songs that I wish would be recorded already!

The first video is from my friends, The Elizabeth Kill, and is a great warm-up for the Alice in Wonderland movie coming out this weekend. It’s for a song called “The Great Escape” and features some bits from the movie…it’s going to be trippy!

The second video is from Nico Vega frontwoman, Aja Volkman. I swear this woman can do no wrong! This video is for a song called “Stick of Wax”, an incredibly haunting song sung by such a beautiful voice…a must listen!

Finally, one of my fave SD bands, Dirty Sweet, was supposed to come up to LA and play some acoustic gigs at The Hotel Café…these dates, sadly, seem to have been removed from their calendar in favor of time spent at SXSW followed by a European tour…as a result I’ve been mourning by watching some lovely acoustic Dirty Sweet videos! Here’s one of them, the title track of their forthcoming album (April 6th!!) “American Spiritual”. For more Dirty Sweet videos, check out their myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/dirtysweetmusic
