Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 5/13-5/19

This week is going to be a big week for music. Tuesday I am quite excited to see two sets of brothers, The Kin at The Viper Room followed by Hudson Taylor at The Hotel Cafe. Thursday we have another High Voltage event, this time we are back at one of my favorite venues, On the Rox (bar above The Roxy) and we have DJ High Voltage who is going to be spinning all the tunes I want to hear (dance party!). Finally, next weekend, I am thrilled to say I am a participating in one of the more exciting musical events I’ve uncovered, Overture Con (http://overturecon.com/). Saturday and Sunday night, there are some great bands including personal favorites Queen Caveat, Semi Precious Weapons, and Tournament of Hearts. During the daytime, there are special VIP activities to interact with the artists as well as some killer panels. I am on a panel on Sunday entitled “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of being a Super Music Fan”…boy do I have some stories to share about this topic! No, I didn’t get into The Rolling Stones warm up show at The Echoplex on Saturday. As epic as that experience would have been, I honestly had other plans that I was more excited about and seeing SXSW standout’s The Virginmarys at The Viper Room was the highlight of my week!

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 4/22-4/28

It’s been a busy week of deadlines. I didn’t really get out much and when this happens I can go a bit crazy. I might do stupid things like buy expensive concert tickets just to see a 20min set from the opening band (The Neighbourhood on Tuesday were amazing). I also might do things like go from a brilliant acoustic Young Guns set to see The Backstreet Boys just to avoid staring at the computer screen for a day.

And now it’s Sunday and despite working until 2am on Friday night, I’m so behind with what I needed to do this weekend. Hopefully things won’t leak over too much into next week as I’d really like to start going to shows again. My number one pick would probably be The Virginmarys on Saturday at The Viper Room, but I feel like there are a lot of really solid rock line ups this week and I am beyond ready to rock it out!

Watching some season 1 Veronica Mars in honor of the super successful Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the VM movie. I’m excited (and yes, I pledged). I’ve seen these episodes so many times, it’s the perfect background for getting some work done.

Speaking of work, it’s been overtime for me lately, so I haven’t been going to as many shows. There are some good ones next week too. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 4/1-4/7

Happy Easter! After a long and tiring week, it is really nice to relax and celebrate. When I moved to Los Angeles 5 years ago, one of the things I knew I would miss would be sharing these big holidays with my family, but I’m pretty sure that first year celebrating Easter in LA was when I realized what a great new family I had made here. And in the subsequent years this gathering has become my yearly reminder of how many wonderful and inspiring people I have since met and claimed as my own. I’m pretty sure this year is our largest gathering yet. I mean, the leg of lamb my roommate brought home yesterday…well, I wasn’t even sure it would fit in the oven!

I hope to extend my celebratory mood into the week with the help of some excellent shows. I think the two I’m most looking forward to are the amazing string of acts at The Hotel Cafe Wednesday and Sunday nights. People often ask me what my favorite venue in LA is and I have to say The Hotel Cafe because there is no other venue that can so consistently put together solid lineups from front to back.
