Oh, Monday.  The start to my typical week. Unfortunately my dog had me up off and on from 4:15 am onward so my mental capacity is not at peak performance. Thankfully I have time to rest up before the onslaught of shows this week from Dead Feather Moon, Tom Odell, Wolfmother, Writer, and Jesse LaMonaca to name a few. The Bard Chronicles: Better Looking People With Superior Ideas at Soma 7/13/13

It’s been a long time since I’ve been to Soma. Actually, I tend to avoid that place and all it’s punk ass underage kids who think they know what’s up. However, when invited by a band to see their debut performance in San Diego, I’ll make an exception.

While attempting to haggle my way inside with my camera, I ended up meeting the band out front when they overheard me drop their name. Since I was only armed with emails and a Soundcloud link , I wasn’t really sure what to expect but I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised.

Despite it being a rather quiet Saturday at Soma, Better Looking People With Superior Ideas (whew that’s a mouthful) had some fans in the crowd. For a two person band, they create a surprisingly full sound and I was very happy to see a trumpet up on stage. Perhaps my favorite element of theirs was the use of a glockenspiel. Or was it a xylophone? Either way, I though the delicate tones were a great addition and a nice layer. My only wish for BLPWSI is that they find more of a concrete direction in their music. They was a wide range and variety from raging guitar to the delicate glockenspiel and it didn’t always feel like it was coming from the same band. I do see a lot of potential for growth and can’t wait to see where they go from here!

After all my Warped adventures, it’s been hard to get myself out of the house. I did manage to see Joan Jett and The Blackhearts at the fair this week which was a blast. Did you see my show review? Anyways, I think this week the tides will turn because Nico Vega is coming to town with Crash Kings! In addition to that we have Portugal. This somewhat delayed calendar post is due to the fact that I’ve been out late the past two nights in a row. In fact, I just got home. What was I doing? Ok, I’ll tell you… I’ve been at Disneyland and California Adventure. Yesterday was spent hanging with a friend from AZ I hadn’t seen in awhile and wouldn’t see for awhile. Tonight, was all about Mad T Party for me. Either way, I’m a little sore from all the walking and dancing. This week doesn’t promise to slow down starting with Free Energy Monday at Soda Bar and ending with The Silent Comedy on Sunday. After that, we will be off to SXSW!

I can’t believe Halloween is almost here! It feels like it was just New Years Eve. Crazy how time flies. Speaking of time, I had a great time this Saturday at Rocktoberfest with Family Wagon, Blackout Party, Transfer, The Silent Comedy and Mariachi El Bronx. I’m still recovering from that run night out. October is starting to wind down but we get Oberhofer, Calexico, Two Door Cinema Club, and The Short Eyes this week to name a few. Should be fun!
