Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 3/5-3/11

Last week, my evenings were largely devoted to SXSW prep. I’d like to say the same for this week, but there are just too many good shows. Dan Wilson (my fave songwriter) is playing three shows at The Hotel Cafe along with Rachel Yamagata, Queen Caveat has their EP release show Thursday, and Friday night The Strip delivers the powerful one, two punch of Twin Atlantic at The Viper Room and Nico Vega with Street Drum Corps at The Roxy. And honestly, that’s just the beginning of the great shows this week in LA. Here are the rest of my suggestions:

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 2/27-3/4

This week’s concert list is brought to you from an Academy Awards viewing party. So far, Hugo is winning a lot more than I anticipated, but I’m still pulling for The Artist for the win. I did pretty well seeing all but one of the best picture nominees (sorry War Horse, not gonna happen). I’m sad that there weren’t more original song nominations…and that we aren’t going to see a live performance of “Man or Muppet”. Although, I am enjoying the live music playing out to commercials (was that an electric guitar?).

I can’t believe next week we enter the month of March! It’s almost SXSW time!! In preparation, I may be a little light on show-going next week. Alternatively there are some great shows on the West Side this week which will really save me on travel time. It’s been a crazy busy weekend. Friday night went from hanging out at Bedrock studios and running into some great bands like The Chevin and Vanaprasta to hanging out at Room 5 and being introduced to a fantastic San Francisco musician, Chi McClean, and finally ending up at The Viper Room to rock out with Queen Caveat. Saturday I actually saw the ocean *gasp*. Something I rarely do, even living so close. Sunday’s evening adventures include a bday party and a stop at The Hotel Cafe to catch up with Lovers Drugs.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 1/23-1/29

Last week was a phenomenal week of shows. I believe I was out every night save the weekend (I much prefer staying in on the weekends anyway). My weekend was also fairly “epic” but in another sense. I made my third batch of 2011 mix CDs while watching the third Lord of the Rings movie (Return of The King) and I started re-reading the third book in the Inheritance cycle. I rather enjoy retreating into worlds full of elves and dragons where epic battles are won and heroes come from the unlikeliest of sources. And as I listen to Annie Lennox sing “Into the West” I am disheartened at the thought of returning to my somewhat less glorious real life.

Life does have a few treats in store for me this week, however. Bonnaroo highlight (and ’11 mix artist) Cory Chisel will be in town Tuesday night at The Echo, San Diego faves, Endoxi, will be rockin’ The Roxy Thursday, and LA love Queen Caveat is back in action with their first show of the new year Friday night at The Viper Room. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/10-10/16

This weekend just seemed to slip through my fingertips. I swear I spent most of it in front of my computer working, but I certainly don’t have anything to show for it. I did manage to get out Friday night for a little Culture Collide (such a great festival!). Then Saturday night was an evening at The Hotel Cafe where I was taken on a journey back to 2004 with Michael Tolcher. Hearing Michael play some of my favorite tunes from that year made me realize just how connected certain songs are to particular years of my life…and that 2004 may very well be my happiest year. I’m not sure if that year’s greatness was more because of the music or because of the events that the music accompanied, but I do know that the bands and songs that I associate with that time will forever be my favorites.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 11/15-11/21

Just got done grading a seemingly infinite number of exams…plus a few quizzes. Aside from two musical interludes, that’s all I’ve been up to all weekend. As for the interludes, tonight was The Elizabeth Kill at The Mint and Saturday was Philadelphia goes LA, hanging out with other Philly area natives and checking out some bands with Philly roots (Terrible Things at The El Rey and The Shakers at The Cat Club). All in all, I just can’t believe the weekend is coming to a close!

But as one week ends, another begins. And what a fantastic line-up of shows this week. Greatness, in the form of SD band The Silent Comedy, returns to LA this week Thursday at The Echo. I’m also really excited about The Lonely Forrest, a band that made my SXSW ’10 mix but that I’ve never seen. Plus Queen Caveat, Fitz and the Tantrums, Freelance Whales, Dynamite Walls…I’m exhausted already! Some tough choices will have to be made this week.
