It’s a drizzly Monday down here and all I want to do is go back to bed. Well, I was up most of the night because my dog needed to go out and I ended up getting very little sleep. I think between the gloomy weather and the lack of sleep I will not be making it to the gym today. Hopefully I can catch up on sleep because we have some great shows this week.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 5/6-5/12

It seems that it is Sunday again whether I like it or not. It’s been a good week. Band-wise, I got to see an old favorite (Joe Firstman), a current obsession (Irontom), and a few new bands that will be making my lists including The Heavy Heavy Hearts and The Last Internationale the latter of whom I saw at my new favorite Thursday event, the Sunset Strip Farmers Market. Music, food, and honey lemonade…definitely worth looking into (http://sunsetstripmarket.com/).

Yesterday was Star Wars day and today Cinco de Mayo so there is a lot to celebrate. Although I did go to a Star Wars party, I spend a good part of it dealing with an email from my boss with the subject line “favor” (never a good thing). I continue the work theme today as I watch Antonioni’s Blow Up with commentary and plan my week ahead.

Lots of good shows next week…too many really. Especially on Thursday. I guess my top picks would to go Tuesday night at The Roxy with Irontom, Dinner and a Suit, and The Parlotones and Stephen Kellogg’s solo appearance at The Hotel Cafe on Sunday. I’ve listened to his forthcoming record and am very excited to see the songs performed live.

I’m still riding that post-SXSW high. I’ve been stealing minutes here and there to process all the pictures and songs, bring faces back to the pile of business cards, and write and reflect on everything that happened so that I won’t soon forget. I’ve also taken some time this week to catch up with friends and share my stories. I was only gone a week, but it seems like it was much longer based on all that happened while I was gone. Hopefully (or maybe not) this week will feel a bit more routine. There certainly are a number of shows inhabiting my week’s schedule. SXSW ’13 – Day 2

It’s quite a bit later than I’d like it to be, but I’m still bouncing and full of energy from today’s events…everything feels good (except for my feet and over-fed stomach). I’m in my happy place. I’m at SXSW!

Today began by picking up credentials (a breeze!) and meeting friends at The Great British Breakfast where we dined on sausage, eggs, beans, bacon, and toast. Sometime during breakfast, the Spotify line-up was announced and included twenty one pilots to play mid-afternoon. The rest of the morning was a blur of meetings and photobooths with only that one clear item on the agenda. When we approached the Spotify house and found ourselves at the end of a line that wrapped around the house and well down the street, I’d say “dismay” was an understatement for my emotional state. Luck, however, was with me and we all got in nearly 40 min. later right as the first song was starting. The twenty one pilots duo did their best not to let the heat and crowd full of industry folk deter their typically dynamic and engaging performance. The set seemed short, but it did the trick to propel me through the afternoon.

Having a badge this year for the first time, I was able to spend some time wandering around the Trade Show where we ran into a 10 ft. astronaut, walked through a giant yam, created a post-it work of art, snacked on some delicious mini-desserts, and, of course, heard some music (including a band in a box!)…all while wearing cowboy hats.

After a brief respite and dinner of mini burgers and fries at The German Haus, the evening started to take its musical shape. We ended up at Hype Hotel to catch a bit of Ivan & Alyosha, a SXSW favorite from last year, and eat some Taco Bell (yes, there was a lot of eating today). Afterwards we headed to The British Embassy where Lucy Rose was sitting comfortably in a chair singing with an acoustic guitar surrounded by a full rocking band. It wasn’t exactly what I was expecting, but I had no complaints. Next, we went to celebrate the two year anniversary of LMN favorite The Milk Carton Kids whose gorgeous harmonies, melancholy tunes, and unforgettably hilarious banter had the entire room at The Central Presbyterian Church completely transfixed…they received a standing ovation at the end of their set.

I was debating staying at the church to catch Gaby Moreno, but even the short time between sets was too much for me to be without music, so I ran back to Hype Hotel to sample Irish songsters Little Green Cars (and maybe grab a burrito), then headed back to The British Embassy to close out the night. I got a boost of energy in the form of Willy Moon whose lively stage presence was infectious. Finally, perhaps the highlight of my night, after waiting well over a year, I FINALLY GOT TO SEE BASTILLE!! Before the set, I spoke with a Manchester native who told me that it would be near impossible to see this incredibly popular band over in England is such a tiny venue, let alone so close to the front of the stage. The buzz in the room before and during the set was electric and I certainly felt incredibly grateful to be there as the quartet took over the room with songs from their recently release, Bad Blood. Two hours later, and I still can’t quite shake the excitement of that set. But I can, I will, and I must, for I need to get some rest before tomorrow’s adventures.

Kristen’s Top 10 Acts to See at SXSW ’13

I’ve listened to over 1600 bands, RSVPed to countless parties, and have a schedule that is twenty some pages long. It’s impossible to see everything you want during SXSW, so in order to help keep me sane, I’ve selected a few bands that I hope to prioritize in the coming week.

1. twenty one pilots

This band is my current obsession after seeing them play in LA at The Troubadour. Their unexpected yet compelling songs and insane live energy make them a can’t miss and I intend to see them upon every opportunity.

2. BOY

Boy’s album “Mutual Friends” is my favorite album to come out this year so far. After seeing them live at The Troubadour last week, they have firmly cemented themselves as one of my top picks for SXSW.

5. Bastille

Bastille’s “Flaws” made one of my end of year mixes two years ago and the guy has yet to play a city that I can get to. Sure, he’s from the UK, but still…I’ve been waiting far too long to miss out on a Bastille show.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 11/26-12/2

As the holiday party invitations start to come in, I’m reminded that it’s time to put my end of year music mix together. For those of you who don’t know, every year I make a mix of all the songs and artists that meant something to me over the year…they are usually accompanied by a story and pictures. I work on this all year round, but the hardest part is pulling it together at the end and finding the time to create and produce the final product (aka Christmas gifts!). For this year’s mix, I had the first “rough draft” done for a couple weeks ago and and I’ve since made a few tweaks, but I’m still not 100% happy with it. However, if my first party is in just a couple of weeks, I’ll need to start manufacturing soon! Or maybe I should just accept the fact that my Christmas gifts will be late…again.

And who knows, maybe there will be a show this month that will change my life and alter the mix entirely (December 6^th early show at The Satellite, I’m looking at you!). There are plenty of promising options these week. Here are my picks:

It’s October!! One of my favorite months. Actually, if you look at Facebook, it seems to be a lot of people’s favorite month. I hope you all have been up to fun things. I’ve been stuck behind a computer screen for my classes and it’s not very fun. I did get out to the Poway Rodeo this weekend (ok I worked it) and the music selection wasn’t half bad. Speaking of half bad, the shows in SD this week aren’t half bad. We have some major acts coming through; Ed Sheeran, The Black Keys, Florence + Machine, Grouplove, The Head and The Heart, Kimbra, Dr. Dog, and The Milk Carton Kids to name a few.
