NIVA (National Independent Venue Association) hosted on YouTube a three-day virtual festival to Save Our Stages this weekend. The first act of Friday, Alec Benjamin, performed his set at my favorite stage, The Hotel Cafe, and the feelings hit hard! The Hotel Cafe has felt like a home away from home for me for over a decade now and since my last memorable evening there in early March, this has been the longest stretch of time I’ve spent away from the space since moving to LA. The entire Save Our Stages Festival was a reminder of how much I miss not just the live music or the artists but the venues as well. We’ve already lost some of the music spaces I’ve personally been to here in LA as well as in Austin, PA, DC, and Manchester…I shudder knowing that the list will just get longer before venues are safe to frequent once again. The thing I cling to is the knowledge that the community of music lovers (us!) is large and strong and passionate and we will prevail. In the meantime, there are livestreams:
