Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 12/31-1/6

Happy New Year!! Whatever you end up doing to celebrate the transition into 2013, I hope you stay safe and have a blast. Once again I am foregoing my former tradition of staying in and watching Star Wars in favor of some live music. My concert of choice this year is Dirty Sweet at The Griffin in San Diego! A one-off reunion show from a band I love that hasn’t played in a couple of years. How can I refuse? I think more bands “on hiatus” should do this kind of thing.

Anyway, I’m really looking forward to so many shows coming in the New Year, starting with next week! I’m particularly excited about Thursday night at The Roxy with Lakes, The Active Set and Royal Teeth. I hope to see you all out at a show soon!

Kristen’s 2012 Mix – Track 13 – Tyler Hilton

I spend all year going to shows and collecting songs and pictures and stories. I’ve spent the last month or so compiling some of my top musical memories into a music mix with accompanying booklet (my favorite little crafting project). So, here I share with you my top tracks of 2012.

Enjoy!!

Tyler Hilton

2012 was the year one of my long-time favorites, Tyler Hilton, FINALLY released a new album, Forget The Storm. I’m not sure It was worth the 8 year wait, but it’s a stellar album and whenever I listen to it, I get that feeling of “home”…whatever that means.

Garrison Starr

With most of my favorite singer-songwriters moving away from LA in the past year or so,  Garrison Starr is one of those who stayed, instantly elevating her to the top of my local songwriters list. This year she released her album, Amateur, which contains this song.

Matthew Perryman Jones

Matthew Perryman Jones is the kind of artist that can melt the very soul. One listen to this song and I was hooked. Matthew is the only artist on my mix that I have not seen perform. That is a true testament to the degree to which this song has made an impression on me.

The Neighbourhood

The Neighbourhood is one buzz band that I can totally get behind. I became obsessed after just a few listens online and saw them upon first opportunity at a festival downtown. I still can’t stop listening!

Leogun

Leogun was a facebook recommendation from Biffy Clyro’s Simon Neil. I listened (of course) and immediately like the band. I was more than a little excited when a mere week after I first heard them, this UK band booked a show in LA at The Satellite. Their live performance only further cemented my love.

Dead Sara

Dead Sara’s self titled album finally came out in April and the rest of the world started to catch on the fact that this is the best band breaking right now. This year, I saw several epic Dead Sara performances, but I worry this band is getting too big for me and I may not see them again…unless of course I have another run-in with the lead singer while I’m on vacation (yeah, that happened).
