Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 9/3-9/9

Happy Birthday (belated) to Amanda! Her birthday was the 20^th of August, but we are celebrating this weekend in LA with lots of food, late night boba, and music! I was particularly excited to attend the Made in LA Fest at Golden Road Brewing which turned out to be the kind of gathering, full of homegrown LA talent, that just warms the heart and made me incredibly grateful to have lived in Los Angeles these last 10 years.

Next week shows no signs of slowing down in the good music department! We’ve got Reeve Carney and the Revolving Band doing some live taping at Madame Siam, SXSW fave Jade Bird headlining the Troubadour, and the return of one of my favorite nights, Coffee Shop Arena Rock, at the Hotel Cafe!

Hello from Denver, Colorado! I’ve been in the mile-high city catching up with one of my favorite people. There has been good food, lots of quality time, and a baseball game (it’s been a very baseball heavy week). I’m leaving late tonight so I can be back in LA for Zane Carney’s last show of the year, Monday night at The Troubadour. I imagine he’ll pull out all the stops! I’m also getting ready to swoon over British singer/songwriter Tom Walker Friday night at The Moroccan Lounge. There isn’t much out yet from this guy, so I’m anxious to get a peak of what his debut album (coming out this fall) might sound like.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 8/20-8/26

I have discovered something more uncomfortable than sitting in an unairconditioned room trying to work all day…sitting in said unairconditioned room trying to work while you are running a fever! Needless to say, my day has not gone as planned. Yesterday, however, I did my due diligence catching over 20 bands at Echo Park Rising. It was nice to see so many local faves, but I was mostly excited about discovering new acts like Foxes & Lions, New American, Lucy & La Mer, and Hey Hey which is not a band, but a tea shop turned venue that was by far the most enjoyable place to be with its comfy seats and boba tea bar.

Next week is a short one for me as I am taking off Thursday night for a long weekend in Denver. My baseball team is also in town, so I’m thinking my Monday, Tuesday, and Weds nights might be spent at Dodger Stadium rather than a concert hall or club. If anyone fancies a ballgame, let me know!

Meanwhile, tons of great music to check out. I’m particularly sad about missing out on a great night of rock Thursday at The Satellite and one of my favorites, Jared & The Mill, playing with Lydia Saturday night at The Troubadour. Someone better go in my stead.

I’m escaping the heat this weekend down in San Diego…although last night’s show at The Northpark Observatory left me a sweaty hot mess. I guess that’s what you get when you combine Moon Taxi with The Struts! Today, I’m heading back to LA with a pit stop in Long Beach for 98.7’s summer camp where I’m most excited to see Judah & The Lion, Sir Sly, and AJR! Hopefully there will be shade.

Next week is Echo Park Rising! I’ll need to find some time to go through all of the bands, but a free festival in Echo Park focused on local and rising bands…can’t miss it! http://epr.la/schedule/

Last week was yet another example of how music fixes everything. I was feeling overwhelmed by life and then Monday night, after spending an evening with Zane Carney and his incredibly talented friends, somehow everything became manageable again. And I’d like to pause for a second to reflect on how cool it was when Zane brought up his sister, Paris, as well as Evan Rachel Wood and T.V. Carpio to sing a medley of songs from the movie, Across the Universe which celebrated its 10-year anniversary last week by spending a few days back in the theaters.

Next week, Harvard & Stone seems the place to be with an exciting list of up and coming bands, but my pick of the week goes to Sunday night’s show at The Moroccan Lounge featuring Cary Brothers!

The GISH has begun! This weekend, I embark on a week-long scavenger hunt with an international team of intrepid, creative, and slightly weird individuals. I’m doing my best to fight through exhaustion and find some time in my already jam-packed schedule to participate in at least some of the mayhem. Today, I visited an animal shelter, found a sign language instructor, and am thinking about engineering and bookshelves…

Also, thinking about all the great music happening this week. Monday, in particular, is going to be an adventure as I play the how many venues can you get to in one evening game. Between Meg Myers’ record release celebration, High Voltage presenting two events (game night at Scum & Villainy Cantina and the Yip Yops residency at The Echo), and the one and only Zane Carney heading at the Troubadour, it will be a fun challenge to see and do as much as possible!
