Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 6/4-6/10

I’m struggling this week with passing deadlines and a seemingly endless to do list. It doesn’t help that everything I attempt seems to be stymied in some way.  The Ticketfly hack did its part to slow down any concert-related research and reporting.  I don’t think I realized how many venue websites relied on Ticketfly until suddenly they were all down!

In the vein of more uplifting reports, I hope everyone made it to at least one of The Struts Roxy residency shows last week because WOW…that band puts on a show!  I wish more bands would do multi-night gigs in smaller venues.  I fully support that concept.  One of the special guests the night I was there was Barns Courtney who you can catch this week at The Wiltern opening for The Kooks.  Other calendar highlights include Matt Maeson at The Echo and the return of Coyle Girelli (The Chevin) to The Hotel Cafe.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 5/21-5/27

After a bit of an emotionally taxing week, Friday night found me at The Bootleg Bar for SUR and it was everything!  Celebrating one of my favorite band’s new EP, Savage Beast, involved dancing, friends, portraiture, lots of much needed hugs, and an opening act that was…well, I’m not exactly sure how to describe a set delivered by a mostly naked man that ended with him being carried off in some sort of stretcher, but that’s what happened.

I have a feeling I’m going to need a lot of music this week, so it’s good fortune that I’m off to the Moroccan Lounge for some Gang of Youths and then my week will start off with a Carney reunion (of sorts) and end in Napa at the BottleRock music festival.  Friends + music = life.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 5/14- 5/20

I threw this week’s calendar together in between baseball games in San Diego (my Cardinals are in town). I drove down Friday night, making a brief pit stop in Anaheim to see Mondo Cozmo and X Ambassadors.  Saturday’s game was a long one (extra innings!) and the outcome was not in my favor.  Sunday’s game was fun, but not only did we lose (again), my post game boba was terrible and my burrito was tainted with onions.  You can’t win them all!  But hey, I got to see my team for the first time this year, so I’m not really complaining. Go Cards!

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 5/7-5/13

If my venture to the Renaissance Faire today taught me anything, it was that I need to work out more.  A little knife throwing and one round of archery arrows and I am sore!  How weird would it look if I busted out some hand weights while waiting for a band to start?

Looking at my list, we’ll have plenty of opportunities to test out my new workout idea.  Last week brought to LA a couple of my top SXSW artists, Boniface and Jade Bird, and this week the SXSW trend continues with Violet Days, Field Report, and Allman Brown.  I’m rather looking forward to re-living more highlights from my favorite week in March.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 04/30-05/06

This week consisted of some music-driven highlights.  From a friend-filled three venue, 7 band “perfect night” to an uplifting evening with Jukebox the Ghost and their rainbow horse, my evenings were pretty satisfying. It was also a great week for new music. I’m excited to dig into new offerings from Cary Brothers, We Are Scientists, and the DMA’s, but honestly, I can’t get past an obsessive listening of Matt Maeson’s new EP, The Hearse.

This week, we have the last of the April residency nights.  If you haven’t caught Ramonda Hammer and Stonefield, here’s your last chance! We’ve also got Mainland, Charlotte Cardin, Dear Boy and the aforementioned Matt Maeson (opening for Bishop Briggs) all taking the stage this week.  How lucky are we?!?

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 4/23- 4/29

Life’s been feeling a bit messy lately, so this weekend I started organizing…my bookshelf!  It was surprisingly cathartic.  I separated by genre and then author, leaving out the unreads for easy access.  Morgan Saint provided the perfect musical backdrop.  I also participated in an episode of our High Voltage Radio Hour.  It was my first show in ages, so I was probably rusty, but I did take the opportunity to talk about some of the music I’ve been listening to lately as well as my new favorite theory that your Harry Potter house can be predicted by the way you eat Handi Snacks.  When the episode is ready, you can listen here: https://anchor.fm/high-voltage-radio-hour.

We’ve got quite a few show options this week, but a few too many on certain days.  Please, someone, tell me what to do Monday night!
