Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 3/26-4/1

This weekend was WonderCon! Highlights included meeting Patrick Rothfuss, chatting with Kevin Eastman and the cast of Final Space, and spending time with friends.  Two days of con crazy seemed trivial compared to my week in Austin, but my lack of sleep persists.  Although I remain hopeful that one day I will get to sleep again, I am fairly confident next week will not hold that day.  Between SXSW discoveries like Pale Waves and Morgan Saint and the very exciting return of The Hunna, we’ve got some fun times, a reservation for the front row at The Troubadour, and a truckload of tea in store…

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 3/19-3/25

Well, another glorious SXSW has come and gone.  I’ve got so many stories swirling around my head, but functioning on 2 hours of sleep, so we’ll just stick to a brief top 6 highlights:

1 – Anything Morgxn related

2 – Falling in love with new artists like Jade Bird, Bad Pony, Sam Fender, and Morgan Saint

3 – The Aussie BBQ and Southwest Invasion (the best parties)

4 – Eating my weight in cheese (seriously, there was a queso-off and then the world’s largest cheese board)

5 – rocking out with SUR

6 – Having Frank Turner call me to the stage to wish me a happy birthday and then seeing the audience, so incredibly happy, sing along with such love and glee to my song request.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 3/12-3/18

It’s beginning to feel a lot like South By….evvvverywhere I go!  From last night’s dance with The Wrecks and Dreamers to this morning’s random free drink at The Coffee Bean, I might as well already be in Austin for my favorite time of the year, SXSW Music Week!  My actual trip begins tomorrow.  Per usual, I’ve listened to all the artists, compiled a 20+ page schedule of events, and packed a suitcase full of comfortable walking shoes.  Top artists to see include faves like Frank Turner, SUR, and morgxn, but I’m also looking forward to checking out a ton of new (to me) artists like Sam Fender, Bad Pony, half*alive, and Jade Bird. We shall see which new artist or band meets (or dare I say exceeds) “the Graham Bar”, so named for Lukas Graham the year that band blew everyone else out of the water.

If you’re in LA and also want to discover some great new music, go check out Findlay or Bobi Andonov playing Monday night. And if you just want to see some favorites do NOT miss the AWOLNATION, Nothing But Thieves, Irontom extravaganza coming to The Wiltern for two nights!

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 3/5-3/11

Had a bit of an adventure Friday night when, driving to First Fridays at The Natural History Museum, I got a flat tire.  It was raining, rush hour, and most auto shops were closing, but I was surprisingly calm as I called for the tow, figured out where I could go to get it fixed that night, and somehow, miraculously made it to the Natural History Museum in time for the main event, Mondo Cozmo.  I’m not sure if it was because of the car troubles or the fact that I hadn’t been to a show all week or the beautiful friends that I ran into at the event or maybe the buffalos the band was playing in front of, but the night turned into one of the most uplifting and transformative Mondo Cozmo experiences (and they are all quite good so this is saying something).

I know I’m not supposed to be going to many shows next week either, but with so many faves (Dear Boy, Dreamers/The Wrecks, Hudson Taylor, A Silent Film, HAWAI) and a plethora of highly anticipated acts (The Academic, Charlie Cunningham, Mt. Joy, Billy Raffoul) coming through, we’ll see how much I can hold to that. Either way, I anticipate a sleep-light week.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 2/26-3/04

One of my greatest, self-ascribed purposes in life is to introduce my people to my bands (hello reason for this calendar!).  Second to that, I also quite enjoy introducing my friends to one another.  Last night, in the unlikeliest location of Silver Spring, Maryland, worlds collided as college friends and grad school friends came together to enjoy an amazing night of music featuring my LA loves, Irontom who are currently on tour with Nothing But Thieves and AWOLNATION.  ‘Twas one for the books!

And while I would much rather continue on the road following that tour to their next location, I am, instead, on a plane heading back to Los Angeles.  Fortunately, there are plenty of shows in LA this week and while my personal show schedule is going to be slightly usurped by SXSW prep,  I’ll need to make it out at least a time or two…eyeing First Friday at The National History Museum featuring Mondo Cozmo!
