Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/3-10/9

Today, two of the most wonderful people that I met in grad school are getting married in the Washington DC area and I am in town for the festivities. After the wedding, I’ll be staying in rural Maryland, house and dog sitting. I’ll have two Dachshunds and a Great Dane as my chargers. I’m hoping to take some time for long reflective walks, but I’m not sure how many days I’ll be able to stay sane without live music. Fortunately, Irontom will be in DC at the end of the week. I very much look forward to seeing them in a new city.

If I were in LA, there are quite a few shows I’d be looking forward to, the Assemble the Skyline reunion and Coffee Shop Arena Rock night at The Hotel Cafe being at the top of my list.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 9/26-10/2

This weekend was agonizing in a Sophie’s Choice kind of way but I ended up going down to San Diego to spend a few days with Amanda and her adorable dog, Lucy.  Thursday night we were able to see the second show ever from the former Rags & Ribbons trio who now go by Arkivist. The harmonies are still there and they ended the set with an old favorite so I am happy to report that you need to go check them out.  Then last night was one of the more intense The Silent Comedy experiences I’ve had. It was impossible not to get swept up in all the feels and I’m pretty sure I sweated more from dancing to the music than the exercise classes Amanda took me to a few days prior.

Today, I’m heading back to LA to party with Highly Suspect (see recently published article here: http://iamhighvoltage.com/2016/09/22/on-the-rise-highly-suspect/).  But first, a quick stop at the Adam’s Street Fair to see Mrs. Henry and Creature and the Woods.  Tomorrow is my show pick of the week with The Wrecks, July Talk, and Nothing But Thieves at The El Rey. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 9/19-9/25

It’s new TV season and today I’m giving Amazon’s Fleabag a go. Second episode started with a pretty amazing scene featuring an AWOLNATION song. This alone will get me to watch episode three. Olivia Colman also has a reoccurring roll and this might take me to episode four or five.  Oh, there is only six episodes…guess I’ll just watch them all then.

This week, I’m doing my best to re-enter the real world after an intense month or so of writing.  This most likely means a lot of cleaning, catching up with friends, and getting out for a few shows.  I’m particularly looking forward to Tar Fest on Saturday. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 9/12-9/18

I’m defending my PhD dissertation tomorrow.  This has been a loooong time coming (longer than the existence of Local Music Nation) and I’m struggling to condense my entire neuroscience research career into a tidy hour-long talk. If you happen to be free Monday afternoon and want to see a very different kind of show, let me know.

Hopefully the presentation will go well and next week I’ll be getting out to celebrate in the best way I can’t think of, with live music!  There are quite a few options for shows, but none will come close to the celebratory mood set by Judah & The Lion. This band throws one of the most uplifting dance parties I’ve ever been to. Friday night at The Troubadour is going to get crazy!

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 9/5-9/11

I made a great discovery today. If you take a cup of ice at The Coffee Bean, add whole milk and their vanilla powder, and mix intensely, you have a drink I will be calling essence of milkshake. As milkshakes are out of my price range at the moment, this makes me quite happy. I may have skipped…

My show list this week has quite a few names that bring up great memories and make me smile. As for my show pick, might I recommend Arkivist playing Friday night at The Satellite. Because I’m sure that name rings zero bells, I’ll mention that the trio of musicians used to be called Rags & Ribbons. I don’t really know what to expect from this new project, but I’m looking forward to finding out!

Here’s what else I’d recommend:

Monday: The Deltaz FREE at Harvard & Stone (10pm)

ALSO: Hunnypot Live FREE at The Mint (7pm)

Tuesday: The Bones of JR Jones& Avi Vinocur at The Hotel Cafe second stage (8pm)
ALSO: Super Tuesday FREE at Butter’d Up (10pm)

Weds: The Record Company at The Grammy Museum (8pm)
ALSO: Bayside at Regent (8pm)
ALSO: The Watkins Family Hour at Largo (8:30)

Thursday: Sonia Rao, Ernie Halter, Paul McDonald at The Hotel Cafe (8,9:30,10:30)
ALSO: Barns Courtney at The Troubadour (8pm)
ALSO: The Dustbowl Revival at Saint Rocke (8pm)
ALSO: Counting Crows & Rob Thomas at The Greek Theatre (6:45)

Friday: Arkivist, Harps at The Satellite (9pm)
ALSO: Matthew Szlachetka, Jeff Silba & friends in the round at The Hotel Cafe second stage (9pm)

This email is brought to you with a view of the water in Summerland, CA.  This weekend I’ve been able to see dear friends, discover my new favorite gummies in the shape of sea creatures, renew my love of hiking and extreme hatred for the smell of brewing coffee, eat tacos, and watch the sun set over the ocean.  I opted out of some of the more Bacchus-inspired events of this bachelorette party weekend in order to sit in front of my computer and get some work done.  I’m taking a break from said work to put together my musical game-plan for next week.
