Dancing shoes were activated last night at the Moroccan Lounge when Bristol’s The Ramona Flowers played the entirety of their latest album, Made by Humans. The crowd was small, but connected as the set continued on towards the midnight hour. It was one of those nights when the music transported you out of time and space. Openers, The Lucky were also a delightful new add to my LA band watch list.  

Thinking about next week, I’ve got my eyes on the always stellar Coffee Shop Arena Rock night at the Hotel Cafe, The Classic Crime making a rare LA appearance opening for Emery, and Irish band Somebody’s Child near the end of their North American tour…

As this calendar comes out, I’ll be visiting a new venue, Sid the Cat Auditorium, for the first time.  The occasion is a Valentine’s Day Ball with Z Berg and friends and the one and only Sarah McLachlan is listed as one of those friends. Also listed is Z Berg’s band, The Like, which was a big college era band for me so potential for nostalgia is high.

Sign me up to live at the Moroccan Lounge next week please! Starting Tuesday night with one of my top rated SXSW bands, In Color, every night next week the venue hosts at least one show I want to be at. In addition, Sarah McLachlan plays special guest at a night with Z Berg and Friends at the new Sid the Cat Auditorium, Ye Vagabonds offers lush Irish harmonies at Gold-Diggers, and buzzy English artist Erin LeCount has two nights at the Roxy. There was a moment last week at the Luca Fogale show where the entire front row seemed to have glistening cheeks. It was difficult not to be overwhelmed at the power and beauty of his music as Luca and his band played mostly new songs off the album Challenger, which was released that very night. But this is the kind of overwhelm I live for and there is nothing quite like group therapy in music form.

Up next we have the rescheduled Jacob Banks and a mini Truth & Salvage Co. reunion with Tim Jones of Whiskey Wolves of the West and Walker Young highlighting my music wish list.

Tony Lucca wrote a new song for the occasion of his final show at the Hotel Cafe, Cahuenga location and, as “Adios, Cahuenga” came to a bridge that was a list of artists that have grown from that scene, my eyes started watering as the memories of my last 18 years of going to shows in this sacred space flashed before my eyes.

I have a feeling this is a sentiment I’ll be sharing a lot in the venue’s remaining months.

Next on my list of can’t miss shows is Dear Boy Friday night at Zebulon. This is the band’s postponed show from the fall when they released their second album, Celebrator. It’s also singer Ben Grey’s birthday party which is one more reason to celebrate.
