Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 2/2-2/8

I’m feeling very grateful this week for living in LA. There aren’t many places where you can sit outside and work all day long. It’s quite pleasant until you get locked out of the house because you didn’t think to take your keys to sit in the backyard. Then, suddenly, it just feels cold.

On the music front, I’ve been obsessively listening to Badflower’s “The Jester”, Brandi Carlile’s “The Eye”, Paul Keen’s “Pick Another Part” and Tony Lucca’s entire self-titled album. Tony’s album release party last week featured an appearance from Keaton Simons who is playing three shows this week on Friday, including a double set at my newly discovered downtown club, Mrs Fish. My other show pick this week is Wednesday night at Harvard & Stone where The Active Set will be celebrating their EP release.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 1/26-2/1

Oftentimes I have my weeks pretty planned out in advance. I’m not very good with last minute decision-making. Last week, however, was an aberration on several accounts and as a result I ended up at an epic Butch Walker/Frank Turner show at The Hotel Cafe and an Irontom double header at a new (at least to me) venue downtown called Mrs. Fish.  Weeks like this leave me exhausted but also inspired.

I have some actual plans up my sleeve for this week that will hopefully be equally inspiring. Monday night is Zane Carney’s last residency date at the Hotel Cafe. After 5 months of Mondays, here’s your last chance to see him at this venue before he moves on to bigger things. My other show pick is Thursday night at The Satellite. Crash Kings headline with openers Badflower and My Goodness. On that last band, I’d been meaning to see the Seattle rockers since first hearing their head-banging “Cold Feet Killer”. I feel this will be a show to remember.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 1/19-1/25

Well, the one exciting thing I did last week involved an NDA, so not much to report here other than my increasing hatred for the smell of coffee. I’m struggling to find a good place to sit and get work done that doesn’t involve that particular odor which makes me nauseous.

Show pick this week? Well, if you were lucky enough to get tickets, The Milk Carton Kids in the little room at Largo will be a fairly epic event I’m sure. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 1/5-1/11

I am looking forward to this week and returning to a more normal show schedule. As much as I’ve enjoyed my evening X-Files watching, I’m beginning to hear Mulder and Scully’s voices in my head which might be fine, but they are usually arguing and that isn’t overly pleasant.

January brings with it some fantastic residencies. It’s the last month for seeing Zane Carney at The Hotel Cafe and as a bonus, Josh Kelley will be playing as well each Monday. Tuesday nights we have Leighton Meester at The Hotel Cafe and every Friday, Jimmy Gnecco at The Viper Room. This Friday will be particularly good as 8MM serves as Gnecco’s opener. This week is also a good one to head to The Satellite, as every night has free entry.

Here are the rest of my musical suggestions:

ALSO: Leighton Meester at The Hotel Cafe (8pm)
ALSO: Katy Rose FREE at Writer’s Lounge (formally Hemingway’s) (10pm)
ALSO: Maxim Ludwig at Bootleg HiFi (8:45)

Weds: Bernhoft at The Hotel Cafe (9:30)
ALSO: In The Valley Below, The Bulls, Rose’s Pawn Shop, Dr. Doctor FREE at The Satellite (9pm)
