Kristen’s 2012 Mix – Track 2 – Ed Sheeran

I spend all year going to shows and collecting songs and pictures and stories. I’ve spent the last month or so compiling some of my top musical memories into a music mix with accompanying booklet (my favorite little crafting project). So, here I share with you my top tracks of 2012.

Enjoy!!

Ed Sheeran

My album of the year award goes to Ed Sheeran’s +. Each song is worthy of hit status. This singer-songwriter who can freestyle with the best of them, started the year playing an intimate Hotel Cafe gig and ended it announcing headlining dates at The Palladium and an opening slot with Taylor Swift, so…good year for him. My favorite Ed Sheeran moment was seeing him at SXSW. I also got the opportunity to interview him. Want to know why his emblem is a cat paw? The man simply likes cats…

Watch This: Empires “Keep It Steady”

There have been lots of awesome video releases lately. Today’s pick is from Chicago rockers, Empires. They have a new video for their song “Keep It Steady” which can be found on their most recent album, Garage Hymns.  Empires is on the list of bands appearing at SXSW this year. This makes me very very happy as their live shows are killer, but rare on the West Coast.

Enjoy!

Watch This: Biffy Clyro’s “Black Chandelier”

Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro released the video for “Black Chandelier”, the first single from their forthcoming double album, Opposites. I quite like this song as it has many of the Biffy elements I am so fond of (great melody, rockin’ breakdown, unexpected musical flares, lyrics that make me think then make me smile, etc).

“it’s just the two of us and a cute little cup of cyanide”

The video is pretty cool too. I love how it ends.

p.s. One of my favorite shows of the year was Biffy Clyro at The Satellite. Have you seen my pictures?

A Thank You Note…

The sun is shining, it’s 75 degree outside, I guess that means it’s that time of year again.  And no, I don’t mean Memorial Day weekend.  The holiday season has sneaked up on me this year.  I seriously don’t know where this year went.  Hi! My name is Ashley and Kristen and Amanda have been wonderful enough to let me hijack their blog again.

I work as a therapist for kids/teens with mental health disorders up in Palmdale.  If you don’t know Palmdale, think mountains, desert, Joshua Trees, and lots of poverty.  To bring something bright to the families we work with, we try to give a toy to every client (and siblings when we can) during the Holiday season.  I am an avid music lover.  The local So-cal music scene and I are great buddies.  As part of our “toy” drive, I have asked local and some not so local bands to donate to our clients for the holiday season.  I did this last year and got such a wonderful and inspiring response that I decided to do it again for 2012.  Let me tell you, the scene did not let me down.  So this is my thank you, to all the bands that have graciously donated to my clients. I really appreciate that gifts that you have sent.  I know from previous experience that the teens will really love what they receive and hopefully you’ll have plenty of future fans.  You guys truly rock!

Watch This: The Silent Comedy’s Blood On the Rails

In case you’ve been living under a rock and are somehow unaware and not in love with The Silent Comedy, you’ve been missing out. Their newest exploit includes another pairing with The History Channel after ‘Bartholomew’ was used in the trailer for the Emmy winning “Hatfields & McCoys” mini-series. This time it’s The Silent Comedy’s ‘Blood On The Rails’ with History Channel’s new show “The Men Who Built America” which chronicles the lives of the titans of American industry; John D. Rockefeller, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford and J.P. Morgan.

Below is a snazzy new music video for ‘Blood On The Rails’ which is intercut with some footage of the new show to give you a tease. Enjoy!

Watch This: Queen Caveat, The Neighbourhood, Belmont Lights

Some new videos came across my path today (despite the fact that my path was primarily    taking me up the Napali coast via boat). I’m really excited about these videos and these bands, so I wanted to share…

Enjoy!

Queen Caveat – “Bullet”

I still think this is my favorite song off Queen Caveat’s EP, Slap on the Wrist. Queen Caveat shows at The Viper Room are always epic and this video does a great job at capturing some of that magic.

The Neighbourhood – “Female Robbery”

Ever since I heard this song a few weeks ago, I’ve been obsessed with The Neighbourhood. This video is awesome and certainly doesn’t help my little problem…

Belmont Lights– “Lights/Both of Us” (Ellie Goulding/Taylor Swift Cover)

Recent discovery, Belmont Lights, showcases their hometown of San Diego beautifully in this video they did for this cover song. I’m having a blast picking out all the San Diego locales… I’m really enjoying this band right now!

Listen! Learn! Love!
