I am celebrating an anniversary this week – 15 years of going to the Hotel Cafe!  My first night living in Los Angeles, I went to the Hotel Cafe to see The Kin and Dan Wilson and 15 years later, it’s still my favorite place to be! In honor of the anniversary, I’ll be heading to the venue a few times this week. In addition to the Hotel Cafe shows, we’ve got the debut of a new venue (The Bellweather), the continuation of a rockin’ Joshua & the Holy Rollers residency at the Silverlake Lounge, and Kong. playing a single release show with WFNM.

A year or so ago I saw Abraham Alexander for the first time, playing a few songs for a radio show. I was particularly inspired by one song so I went online to identify its name and could not locate it anywhere. Months went by and I felt like maybe I had imagined this song. Fast forward to last week when I attended a listening party for the artist’s album, Sea/Sons, at the Gibson Showroom. About halfway through the album, Abraham gets out the guitar to play a couple tunes including one called “Blood Under the Bridge.” A few notes in and I realize that THIS IS MY SONG! There is nothing quite like discovering a new favorite song or artist live for the first time, but in this case, I was able to have that moment twice!

Getting into the Olympics this week. I’d forgotten how much I enjoy watching curling! I went down a bit of an Anais Mitchell rabbit hole this week sparked by repeated listening of recent single “Bright Star”. The good news is there is a new album on the horizon –  her first solo work in over a decade!  The bad news is the singer’s planned tour stop in Los Angeles has been postponed…
