2020 brought a lot of loss and heartache, but nothing hit me harder than the last-minute cancellation of my favorite week of the year at SXSW. Last week, SXSW returned, in an online format and I’m pleased as punch to report that the event was by far the best conference/festival/online event I’ve attended in the past year. I could tell you all about the tech trends, up and coming innovations and inspiring conversations. I could rattle off my list of top films and TV shows watched or detail new products I sampled or interactive events I attended. But the overall takeaway is that the magic of SXSW was there and for me, this feels like it could be the turning point to slowly getting back some of what was missing from the past year.

The only thing that fell drastically short of the usual expectations for SXSW was the music showcases Yes, I was able to discover some new talent and sure, it was fun to see the artists perform in their own countries or backyards. The chat happening alongside the performances also made it easy to connect with both the bands and other like-minded fans and industry professionals. However, nothing will ever ever be able to replace live music, that intangible connectedness it fosters and the feeling that hits when watching a new favorite band perform for the first time.

Based on what I saw last week, moving up the ranks of “must see” acts include Nadia Reid, Hachiku, Alexander Biggs, Ryan McMullen, and Lilla Vargen.

SXSW is online this year. I’ve not been feeling any kind of way about it…until today.  Today, I registered for one of my favorite non-music events of recent years, Wisconsin’s Cheese Fest (this year titled “Cheesin’ Around at #SXSWisconsin”)! I’m not sure what to expect but something will be sent to my home (fingers crossed for cheese!) and there will be a limited capacity live event with Nick Offerman.  Now I’m getting excited to see what kind of magic my favorite week of the year might provide in this new, remote setting.

Last week, I continued listening to my top SXSW picks in between repeated listenings of Garrison Starr’s new album, Girl I Used to Be. I also was introduced to a couple great new artists (Jackson Wooten, Bones Owens), got emotional (again) with the re-stream of the Jagged Little Pill cast’s Holiday special, and celebrated with Jared (of Jared and The Mill) as he embarked on his new project, Wheelwright.

I spent most of last week immersed in the Folk Unlocked Virtual Conference. This was, by far, the best example I’ve seen of a festival/conference/convention capitalizing on the virtual environment while maintaining the live experience and community spirit. I truly felt like I was “in it”. I caught about 120 artists over the span of the week, a lovely combination of known favorites (The Accidentals, Nadia Reid, AHI, Jade Bird) and new discoveries (Hannah Bethel, Holly Arrowsmith, Riley Pearce).

One of the highlights was the Global Music Marathon Closing Party, a massive, live zoom event where teams of international artists talked about their experience collaborating virtually while sharing some music in pre-recorded video collages while the audience joined in via a massive group chat. Even with people turning in from around the world, or perhaps because of it, the event held the kind of magic fostered by collaboration and community, that you can only really experience at a conference or festival. Well done Folk Unlocked!

I was so busy with Folk Festivals, I wasn’t able to catch up on new releases, but I’m very much looking forward to diving into Sydney Sprague’s debut album “maybe I will see you at the end of the world” and will endeavor to do so before her Twitch stream Monday evening.  Other picks this week include Dreamers streaming from The Roxy, Flawes celebrating the release of their new EP and a 3 day festival out of Minnesota called Land of 10,000 Streams.

Last week added to my list of international music discoveries. SXSW listening lead me to bands like The Mysterines (Liverpool), Pillow Queens (Dublin) and Caiine (Manchester) and there were some intriguing finds via international livestreams such as Germany’s Amazon Music stream (Flore), Australia’s Isol-Aid (Cxloe, Los Leo), and the UK’s Communion Presents (Deliah Montagu, Jordan Mackampa). I put all of my new artists in a playlist and listened while putting together a new bookshelf. Yay for no longer having to store books on the floor!

Last week was marked by beginnings including the first online stream for Ally Nicholas, an album release party with Run River North, and the start of Quarantunes Season 2 with The Classic Crime’s Matt and his wife Kristie (which settles my Saturday night plans for the near future). I also started a new job which will be a bit of a life adjustment, but hopefully an overall good one.

The soundtrack of my week was augmented by Bilk’s “I Got Knocked out the Same Night England Did” and Sydney’s Sprague’s “Steve” which is my new favorite nonsensical song name.

Last week was full of fun show surprises: Missy Higgins as part of the Isol-Aid festival, Tom Grennan (and my current song obsession: “Little Bit of Love”) with a refreshingly interactive livestream, and Teitur as a special guest on Glen Phillip’s Wednesday stream. Whenever Teitur plays songs from his Poetry & Aeroplanes (2003) album I am transported back in time to much simpler days. Two bars into “Josephine” and my entire body relaxed!

Moving into next week, we’ve got streams from Jade Bird, Josh Groban, the first show I’ve seen in the new(ish) Clubhouse platform. Clubhouse is audio only so this could be an interesting new way to digest live music.
