Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/5-10/11

Last week was near perfect musically-speaking. I saw some great acts for the first time (Evvy, Hollis Brown), caught a few favorites (Joe Pug, Keaton Simons, The Milk Carton Kids), and was taken back about a decade when I discovered Colin Smith (Mr. North, Colin Smith) has a new rock band called Hundred Hounds. Oh, and I hopped in a van with Jamie N Commons et al and headed to San Francisco to see them play (again) at The Fillmore, experiencing an amazing little slice of tour life (complete with multiple vehicle breakdowns).  I’m currently watching Mrs. Doubtfire in honor of my brief time in SF.

I’m not sure that can be topped, but this week we’ve got Dear Boy opening for The Maccabees, Badflower at The Viper Room, and one of my very favorite events, The Culture Collide Music Festival. I have yet to listen to all of the bands, many of whom are international artists, but you can bet by next weekend, I’ll have my list of acts worth checking out.

Amanda’s SD Concert Calendar 9/28-10/4

This weather has been absolutely miserable. It’s September, almost October and you just need to cool down. Literally. Weather wasn’t the only thing hot this weekend though. I caught the very first show of Billy Sunday, a side project of Jeremiah Zimmerman of The Silent Comedy which also featured a few other Silent Comedy peeps and a Fierce Creature. The next time they play, you have to go!! It was just a dancing good time! I mean, I wasn’t dancing because heat and sweat but a lot of people were and I was bouncing in my seat so that counts, right?

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 9/21-9/27

Meg Myers’ debut full length album, Sorry, came out last week and I cannot stop listening. There were quite a few promising-sounding albums that dropped last week, but I have yet to get past this one. Actually, I’m kind of struggling to listen beyond the first two songs…

Speaking of powerful female singers, my show pick of the week (and it’s quite a full week) goes to Gin Wigmore who comes to The Troubadour on Thursday. The Troubadour plays host to a number of exciting acts this week…people must agree with me as most of the shows have sold out.

Next weekend, there are several festival options in the general LA area. Past precedent suggests heading over to The La Brea Tar Pits for Tarfest, a free music and art festival that features several up and coming musical acts. For more info: http://www.launchla.org/tarfest/
